For some reason I did a set of deadlifts yesterday without a belt and they felt quite good - in fact they felt loads better. Admittedly it was a lighter weight and i suck, royally, at deadlifts.

One of the guys I've lifted with a couple of times deads without a belt and says he doesnt feel right with one on.

Konstantinovs seems to think they make little difference for him (although he is basically a human fork lift - second only to Mr Bolton)

I lift conventional and I wouldnt consider squatting without a belt.

What's your opinion of deadlifting without a belt ?

have religously used a belt for years - and when i didnt have one for many of events/exercises I felt unstable, unsafe and unsupported.

Started training without one, lowered weights n worked back up n now I feel I dont need one on most things, but if I have one I feel even more supported so you can lift with even more confidence.

Defo recommend training without one for a while, use the muscles that sleep when you wear a belt.

i have a pretty decent deadlift and my form is fairly textbook and i dont like using a belt. i sometimes use a neoprene belt for the heavier sets but the big thick powerlifting belts are a no go for me. i feel constricted and really uncomfortable in them

Thanks for your input - can I make a point of commending you for your really brilliant roll-eyes thing - it's like you're being sarcastic but without the effort or the skill

i think it boils down to how you use your core.

if you brace the core, tense the abs and all that s**t, then what is the belt for? Genuine question by the way, not rhetorical. Because this is what i do, and sometimes just see the belt sliding up and down doing f**k all but mental comfort Grin

if you push your abs against the belt, then of course you get something out of it.

I used to be a no belt advocate, you don't need one, you end up with a week core, that sort of thing

However now I do think using a belt is something you should learn to do, as it gives you another plane to push against

I feel completely different when I deadlift raw and with a belt, but I try to do both, cause I think recently I became too reliant on my belt, so I don't wear it on deads until over 200(and trying to raise that number), or yoke till after 300

I think if you dead with a belt the same as you dead without a belt(I think that is what Joni is doing) then it won't help, you need to adjust your form

for me, the higher the pull is from, the more help a belt gives. so for platform/deficit deads im better off without one, and rack pulls im better with. im undecided on regular height deads. I do feel im more prone to rounding my back with a belt on.

That's a fair point, you should lift differently with a belt on that without. With the belt you should be pushing out against the belt and creating abdominal pressure to give your midsection more stability. Without the belt you should be contracting and tightening the abs to keep them tight. At least that's how I understnad the anatomy/process.

I do all my warm ups and lighter work sets without a belt and then stick it on for the heavier stuff. Best of both worlds IMO.

I hate wearing a belt. Don't feel it helps in any respect, usually ends up as a hoola hoop right before it trips me over.

I can;t hit depth in a belt for squats and feel stronger without out i think... but it defo adds kilos to anything overhead purely through stability and increased power tranfer from legs to bar/log/axle.
