Yeah, I agree with Rob. After a bit of a stint on front squats myself I can appreciate what a decent weight that is you did - well done cocker. I'll race you to 160 and you've got a 15kg head start on me (although I should have done more going off my 125kg x 5). What do you say?

Nah, I doubt it. I'd have to put some decent technique training in on that, and I don't think that's really going to happen soon. I might go down to the weighlifting club sometime in a while, maybe when the back and front squats are up some more and give it a go.

I don't clean and jerk at the moment. There just isn't really any point because my jerk technique is not especially good, and I have no prospect of getting any coaching on it, added to which it's not very helpful for powerlifting, which is my priority.

You've done 125x5 but your PB single is 130? That's worse than me.

Actually my best rep performance is 120x6, so we're perhaps not so far apart. You're on.

4/1/07

Squat
60x5, 80x5, 100x4, 120x3, 140x3x7

Bench Press
70x5, 85x4, 100x3x2, 112.5x2x6

Pulldown (neutral)
75x5, 97.5x3, 112.5x3, 127.5x3x5

EZ Bar Curl
30x15x3

EDIT: forgot this-
Rower 500m x 4 / 2 min intervals
1:48.4 / 1:48.1 / 1:48.2 / 1:47.7

Aim was to get them all in under 1:50. Fairly easy really. Want to get 8x500m then will lower the target time.

Good session. Squats were fairly easy. Did something of an experiment and noticed just how much easier they are when you forcefully contract your abs on the way down as well as on the way up. Anyone else noticed this?

Pulldowns just started to get hard. Still absolutely strict.

Also started two new routines today, a bit like the well-known "operations" so beloved of certain Sugden trainees. These are the "See it, lift it" overhead press routine and the "no effort" biceps routine.

The first is this: if you see a loaded bar weighing 50-60kg (62-75%1RM) left on one of the squat racks (very frequent occurrence), do some overhead presses with it. Nothing difficult, just a few reps here and there in between other stuff. Today I got in 50 for 6 sets of 2 and one set of 5.

The second is to train biceps, but put no effort it because effort clearly gets me nowhere. So I started with some piss easy sets of 15. The weight will go up every week or two but as soon as it gets taxing it'll either go down or I'll switch to a different exercise. High reps all the way.

And by the way - in response to a post on MT James asked me to email my criticisms of his moderation, which I did, in some detail. And to be fair to the guy, he took the trouble to write a fairly substantial reply. Apparently the "banter in Journals" thing was in response to members' complaints - though why he couldn't have just said that in his post I don't know.

Yes, I could understand the motivation behind it from his point of view, but it seemed to me an odd way of doing it. I would certainly say I appreciate his willingness to listen.

Fair enough, i seem to remember your last clean pb was 117.5kg which is roughly 30kg less than your front squat, hence the idea. 30kg is a highway! Some hang cleans and cleans from blocks would do the trick and improve your jump under the bar. I understand you're in powerlifting now but to me the front squat is a specific movement for the clean, just to help you figure what i have in mind...

Are you front squatting in order to assist/improve your regular squat or is there any other idea behind this?

One thing i've been wondering about is why you decided to start the olympic lifts in the first place and what did make you turn to powerlifting beside passion!?

Again, well impressed with your lifts mate.
Cheers!

My problems in the clean weren't particularly with the squat under, more with technique in the second pull and the psychological problem of maximal weights.

The front squats are partly as a deadlift assistance exercise and partly just because I like them. I would certainly like to get a better clean at some point, it's just not a priority.

I didn't turn from OL to PL - I started off doing PL and then decided to try OL as well because I like the lifts. I got a bit of instruction on cleans but that was it really and there was no prospect of any consistent coaching so I thought I might as well concentrate on the PL. Besides, trying to do both is very difficult.

If I could be 12 and start lifting (I started weight training - very badly - at 20) over again and have proper coaching, I'd definitely choose OL over PL.

OH Press
40x5, 50x4, 57.5x3x2, 65x2x2, 70x1x5, 65x2x2

Barbell Row
50x5, 70x5, 90x3, 110x3, 120x2x8

No effort triceps training:
EZ Bar OH Extenstion
20x15, 25x15x3

Rower 100m x 20 / 1 min intervals / all < 20 seconds
Total distance 2548m

Liked the rowing. Wasn't actually all that out of breath at the end but it was knackering and I was dripping in sweat.

Squat
60x5, 80x5, 100x4, 120x3x2, 140x2x2, 160x1x2

Fairly crap but not helped by the fact that I've developed some kind of injury in my right knee. Joint hurts when I go to my usual depth. Think it's to do with starting front squats again but quite why I don't know. Dropping front squats for the foreseeable future - competition off I'm afraid JM!

Bench Press
60x5, 80x4, 100x3x2, 110x2x2, 120x1, 125x1, 130x1, 110x2x2

Some more heavy singles in preparation for PB attempt next week - all pretty easy.

DB Bench Press
45sx3x8

I've done 8s (I think) on 45s but the DBs and the benches at Total Fitness are horrible - incredibly awkward, takes 3-4 reps off every set compared to Sugden.

Pull-up
BWx5, [10x3, 15x3, 20x3, 25x3] x 3

ie 12 total sets of 3. Good stuff.

There's obviously something wrong with you mechanically, all these injuries aren't just bad luck.

At a guess I'd say you have bad pelvic tilt - probably very tight hip flexors and weak abs. This can lead to a lot of injuries (particularly knee ones) and even shoulder ones.

I'll have a chat to you on Sunday if you're in. I suffer from it a bit as well, lots of time on the computer or sat down is a great recipe for it unfortunately.
