Yes, it's frustrating that you don't get a lift in when you're unopposed, but sometimes, in life and in sport, s**t happens. It's how you react that's important. I suppose I should have got a safe opener in without a shirt to get the title, but it seems against the spirit of an equipped competition to do that. So, rightly or wrongly, I didn't.

That is very frustrating but you did the right thing.

Cheers Rick, yes I saw you reffing, looked for you afterwards but I imagine you'd gone. See you next month. Happy

Thanks Pete. I'm currently questioning the merits of continuing to compete equipped when I can't train in a shirt for lack of 'helpers', but the worst case scenario is that I'll continue to compete classic. As I commented to someone on Sunday, the shirt felt more like a stranger than an old friend.

I saw your foot slip, I have had the same problem olly shoes and carpet not a good combination.

I have put some sticky sandpaper on the bottom of my shoes seems to be helping.

I was originally down for the morning only, then volunteered to full a gap in the bench, then the reduction to two flights with so many no-shows led to me being released. So I buggered off to get home by tea-time, I'm afraid!

I'm guessing it was to do with bench following deadlift, and lots of talc on the floor. The feet were right where the deadlifting bar had been...

Sorry to hear you missed out Martin, perhaps a hoovering of the platform between the three lift and the bench only would have helped.

Equipped lifting is becoming something of a minority sport populated mostly by Masters. Over the weekend there were 58 Masters entries, 45 seniors and just 4 juniors!

On top of that several categories were won by classic lifters and if you exclude the bombers (sorry), there were only 4 competitors over the weekend that did not take home a trophy.

Yes, I think hoovering would have helped, but I suppose it's easy to be wise after the event.

Re the equipped vs classic, equipped is still the top version at world and European level imo and some of the classic lifters at the weekend were equipped lifters lifting classic for various reasons.

Re the trophies, it's never the lifters fault that others didn't enter. I expect you'll see something very similar at the classic bench next months.

Good to see you again Ian, and to ref with you. It's been far too long. Happy

Despite competing for years as an equipped lifter I have slowly turned to what I once considered the dark side of classic lifting. The squats suits I liked and they definitely made squatting a lot more fun, but the bench shirts were the in-laws of the family, I never really got on with them and only ever tolerated them. They were the straw that broke the camel's back. Horrible things.

Plus I have come to see it as not so much as a test of strength but more of a test of who can handle the shirt the best, which although similar is not quite the same thing.

Also, if you ever sit in the audience with a stranger to the sport, his reaction to classic is that he knows exactly what he is watching, his reaction to equipped is "what the f**k is this?". That has to be worth something.

Yes, I only got into equipped benching because everyone else was doing it and it was the only game in town back in the day. Now there are two games. I'm reluctant to give up something that I'd mastered, but sanguine enough to know that it may be the way forward. Happy Ideally I would do both, and the daft thing is I'm probably good enough to win the equipped title lifting raw. Plenty time before a decision needs to be made, but for the time being the focus is purely classic.

I wouldn't say I was disappointed by today's session. Distraught would probably be more accurate.

Bench
Bar for 10
40 for 8
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
110 for 1
120 for 1
130 for 1 - horribly near my limit
120 for 3
110 for 5
100 for 8
Finish.

I had hoped for a nice easy 140, but not a chance! 10 days ago I did 120 plus a thick blue band. Today I was as weak as a weak person. Gutted! I have four weeks to the British Classic, so the plan is quite simply to increase my bench by 2.5 per session and hopefully travel with a chance of getting 140+. And also to hammer accessories to get my arms and back stronger. What's going on? Last October I was doing 150!

Back and Biceps

Not done any of these for about three weeks, which will partially explain the strength loss. I'm always a better bencher when my back and arms are in good shape. Nothing too strenuous today, just getting back into it.

Seated Row
70 for 10 x 3 sets - overhand grip
70 for 10 x 2 sets - wide grip
70 for 20 - wide grip.

Dumbbell Curls
20s for 10 x 3 sets

Lat Pulldown
50 for 10 x 3 sets

Dumbbell Curls
12.5s for 15 x 2 sets
12.5s for 20

Facepulls
30 for 10 x 3 sets

Shoulder Horn
7.5s for 15 x 2 sets
7.5s for 20

Finish

Nothing much to add really. Felt a bit tired, but it is Sunday afternoon, and nothing too taxing. Bench tomorrow, time to start adding 2.5 per session...

Bench - Operation add 2.5 kg per session continues

Bar for 10
40 for 8
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
110 for 1
120 for 1
132.5 for 1
122.5 for 3
112.5 for 5
102.5 for 8
Finish.

132.5 still pretty pathetic, but needs must...
