Not sure where it would come on your ranking, but I personally recommend pork shoulder. It's often on offer at less than £3 per kilo and is very easy to cook, provided you are patient. Get yourself a 3kg slab for less than a tenner, look up a recipe for pulled pork and then have 500g protein that is not only cheap, but is delicious, and has plenty of calories.

James is spot on.

Picking up reduced fresh meat is a good way to get good quality protein on the cheap.

Head to a decent supermarket late at night and you can pick up some great bargains. Picked up a slab of pork belly for a quid earlier.

Also check the deli, often can get reduced scotch eggs, chicken satay and other nice stuff.

Pick up some reduced fresh bread, cut thick slices, drizzle with olive oil and stick in the oven, goes great with some of Martin's liver pate. The bread will be good for two days if you are cooking it. Perfect with scrambled eggs too.

Pork shoulder makes great stews too. A bit of some spice and lentils to add more cheap protein and cals and you've got 3 or 4 cheap meals.

Pork shoulder is excellent, but I have never seen it at 3 quid a kilo sadly.

What's the deal with non-complete proteins?

I also remember a site, vegetarian site, how to create complete proteins with some combinations.

You cook liver very quickly (flash frying) or very slowly(casserole/slow cooker), anything between these two extremes results in shoe leather.

I love liver.

so presumably if its pigs liver you have to make sure its thoroughly cooked through. I assume this rules out flash frying.

smalls; the how to create whole proteins sounds useful! any chance of a link?

Dave once told me that bread has incomplete proteins and beans do too but when combined they provide not just complete proteins, but also the ultimate student meal lol

Flash fry it in smaller pieces, like chicken, I imagine?

I use these in curried stews.

Also you can make up a massive bunch of lentil dahl, cheap and tasty protein. Great with rice or a jacket potato.

Wrt incomplete proteins. Doesn't having a glass of milk with them make them complete?
