could be for something that wasn't banned in 1996 - for example weren't OTC steroids like superdrol ok until about 2004 when they got banned under the 'prohormones' label.

I said:In SHW news Salimi is down to compete in a few days against Moulei at the Fajr Grand Prix meet.

His starting total is 390 - but here's hoping he can hit something much bigger and be a threat in Rio, although that will be a big ask after such a serious injury.

Kianoush Rostami went 175 / 220 = 395 for new C&J & Total World Records at this meet today.

He's been after that 220 for a while now...

Indeed it would, but you would hope they would have to have some kind of proof (ie. a re-tested 1996 sample, or a confession) to redact the 1996 medal.
As for being s**t at their jobs, perhaps - but these "new"testing methods didn't even exist (or were otherwise extremely impractical) back in 1996.

New testing methods involve identifying new metabolites that have longer half lives, so this takes time.

Much as I think they should do everything possible to make the sport drug free going forward, I do wonder what is to be gained by digging up the past.

This is a good point.

Should they have left Lance alone?

Lance tried to destroy many people's lives along the way. Whilst maybe his cheating was no worse than others, his behaviour towards others was.

And also whilst he had given up cycling he had taken up triathlon and was competing professionally. Sure as a suspected cheat he should be stopped from competing.

Well, many of those he tried to "destroy" were those not only trying to destroy his life but also the life of most of the rest of the Pro Peleton...and those of their Managers, Seignuers, etc...and those of their families, etc...some of which actually happened, more or less.

Ask Pantani how he felt about not being allowed to compete - oh, that's right, you can't, can you?

So it's Ok for him to lie and cheat and people trying to expose it were the ones in the wrong? Surely trying yo expose wrong doing should never be wrong?

As I've said before (and I was in the minority then, I accept) if all the competitors know and all the actual fans know then who really is being cheated?

EDIT: And the people trying to expose the "wrong" as you call it were in the business of selling news stories and writing books, so they were hardly selfless seekers of Justice.

But ultimately everyone will never be cheating. There will always be someone at lower level who is potentially missing out.

And surely "doing the right thing" is good, whether you are being paid for it or not? And when you're faced with countless law suits etc from the likes of Armstrong you need some kind of financial backing to continue.

Well, we are back to the question of what "the right thing" is then, surely? Again...if everyone knows what the situation is who exactly is being cheated against or wronged in the first place?

The guy's who aren't cheating? Even if you are aware that others cheat you might have the morals to not do it yourself.

doping seems endemic in cycling, even amongst the casual rider.

Morals against what, exactly?

Look, there are all sort of valid reasons to not go down the PED route - cost, possible health concerns etc - but I don't see any "cheating" going on.

Whether PEDs are harmful or not, or give you an advantage or not, whilst it's against the rules it's cheating even if "everybody" knows about it. If you were to say the rules should be changed then I understand (although don't agree) that argument.

If breaking the rules isn't, as a matter of fact, cheating then I really don't know what is.
