I can do about 35m in a 25m pool and im not a half decent swimmer! I've finally managed a 25m length on one breath, and felt pretty dizzy after. I know I'm not a good swimmer, but apparently I'm not much of an oxygen-user either...

some nice relaxing jazz. Member 77, 12599 posts SQ 265, BP 165, DL 280710.0 kgs @ 93kgs UnEq | Post Edited: 02.11.2011 @ 11:13 AM by IainKendrick I agree with those that have stated it isn't going to be of much use in a sport that requires high rates of energy production. As has been well put in other posts breath holding in extreme forms of diving is more an ability to handle CO2 loads and reduced O2 expenidture. Maybe there is some cross over to other sports. However the time you'd have to put in to become an expert breath holder with some possible minor increases in endurance performance etc it would not be worth it As an aside Mammals that do dive and are regulary exposed to extreme hypoxic conditions (eg whales) can have higher concentrations of histidine containing physico-chemical H+ buffers (e.g the dipetide carnosine and methylated forms such as balanine) than stored glucose in muscle. Maybe I should start a thread about this?

Still got a little bit of strength Member 400, 22074 posts | Bump! I never pursued this idea (too lazy), but I've just been wondering if holding your breath while walking (or whatever) would have any benefits of any sort?

nothing to hide, please follow my life on webcam Member 255, 3732 posts | I regularly train at swimming taking less breaths. I don't really know why. It's just something swimmers do. It's very different trying to train hard breathing less than tryin to hold you breath for as long as possible or go as far as possible.

Still got a little bit of strength Member 400, 22074 posts | I do actually feel there's something in this. Remember, Sugden said 1 rep sessions wouldn't work.

Still got a little bit of strength Member 400, 22074 posts | Don't you find that there's always a downside to fitness type exercise? Jogging - bad for joints Walking - chafing legs Cycling - restriction of blood flow to genitalia Swimming - ear infections, chlorine bad for skin
