2nd May Andy. It's the BDFPA Brits (equipped) and is in the same venue as the one this weekend was. I've only got one more squat session at all; light stuff on Thursday. Then lots of time to recover which I f**king need at the moment!

Good luck mate, looks like that 275 on the squat will be getting smashed

Wink

Yeah I hope so and thanks. If I don't do anything silly I should have new comp pbs in squat, bench and total. If I have a modicum of luck, deadlift too.

I could make a complete anus of the whole thing, but I will have only myselft to blame if I do. I've deliberately made training hard, doing lots of work on the way up to the big squats and not resting long between sessions. On the day things will be different.

Training 22/4/9

Bench:
60x5;
90x5;
110x5;
130x3;
150x3;
180x1 - 3 board - tight shirt on;
200x1 - 2 board;
220x0 - shirt too tight;
Shirt off and then
110x16;

Decided to try the tighter shirt again as I am happy enough with the looser one. It didn't work, so I'll be sticking with the looser one. It's too tight in the arms. I looked like Popeye and my arms were hurting - lol.

Then some triceps pressdowns, some light lateral raises and offski.

I had a feeling it was going to go tits up which is why I went fairly heavy (150x3) raw, to make sure I did some work!

Training 23/4/9

Squat:
70x5
70x5
100x4;
130x3;
150x3;

Deadlift:
80x3;
120x3;
160x2;
190x1;
210x1;
222.5x1;

Just a few light squats tonight and then, just when I thought I'd finished, Rick made me do some deadlifting. Everything went easily and then he changed my setup for the last two reps (210 and 222.5) and they were much nicer. I am going to try to employ this new technique on the day.

BDFPA British Championships 2/5/9

A number of annoying things happened in the days leading up to this comp. But I am only going to mention them here for amusement value; I don't want you thinking they are excuses for a sub-par performance. I was actually quite pleased with how the day went.

Firstly, our upstairs loo overflowed for about 36 hours whilst we were away and flooded (and ruined) the newly decorated kitchen. We came back to discover this on the evening of my birthday, last Monday. It should be covered by the insurance, but this means that since last Wednesday we've had all the doors and windows shut and four dehumidifiers and ten industrial fans whirring away constantly (as in 24/7) in an attempt to get the place dried out. Obviously various bits of carpet/lino/etc have been removed and all of the furniture from the edges of the rooms have been piled into the middles. This has confined us to our bedroom (not as much fun as you might think) and the entire house is constantly above 30 degrees C! This is f**king ridiculous, especially for a chubster such as me. I've been waking up numerous times each night and am super hot and dehydrated the whole time. And I haven't been able to watch any tele. Bah!

With the house being in disarray (to put it mildly) I was not able to cook and thus not able to eat properly, so I became heavier! I woke up super dehydrated on Friday weighing about 126kg when completely empty. Not good.

So it was with a very sore throat and a tired, aching body that I set off to Coventry for the BDFPA Brits.

The 125s looked to be quite competitive and I'd need to place third to be guaranteed a spot at the Worlds. I cunningly dropped a bit of weight and managed to weigh in at 123.3kg. Didn't want to go in heavy and look like I'd bottled it (that sort of thing is super gay).

There were two lifters who seemed miles stronger than me and then an unknown bloke on whom I needed to keep an eye.

Squat: 260x - got bound up by suit on way down, stopped, then descended further. I guess it was a double movement or something.
277.5 - 2.5kg contest pb ridiculously low (I was basically folded up like a deckchair)
287.5x - failed 2 to 1. Damn! It was strong though and there or thereabouts, so a shame but not a catastrophe. I wish I'd gone a bit lower though!

Bench: 200 - ridiculously fast. The crowd all gasped and laughed etc (maybe they saw something I didn't - lol)
210x - arse came up (floor was a bit slippy).
210 - easy.

487.5kg subtotal. I was plenty strong enough for the 500 subtotal I want, but I didn't get it today. Not to worry. It looked like I had secured third spot by this point, but I didn't know about the unknown chap's deadlift.

Deadlift: 220 - mega fast
230 - mega fast
240 - mega fast and a pb. Damn! Why didn't I go for a bit more? Or even a lot more, like 255 or even 260? Well, first I wanted to get a total, then I wanted to get a total pb, then I wanted a deadlift pb, so I did them in that order.

277.5-210-240 = 727.5kg - third place in the fatties (125). Off to Worlds in November. Wooooo!

All in all a pretty good day considering how crappy the preceding days had been.

tom , i feel your (and more importantly, your misses) pain regarding the kitchen ! pain in the ass getting a new one fitted , last thing you need is 200 tonnes of tom-poo water drenching everything !!

good work on the lifting though ! as i know the deadlift is your least fave , you appear to have made a breakthru ! go mad at the worlds !! 260+ (when n where r the worlds ?)

Thanks all and yes Jon, it's heartbreaking to see the new kitchen getting f**ked. And having all carpets etc ripped up and the place resembling a building site (only noisier and messier) with only the bedroom to sit in is s**tty.

I reckon I have made a bit of a breakthrough in the deadlift. I am going to pretend it's my favourite lift for the next six months or so and see what happens. After I pulled the last deadlift Ian Hawkins just said, "You to**er!" rather than "Well done!" His point being that I should've gone for a bigger weight (I think. Or maybe he just doesn't like me - lol). Before I took the lift I promised him and Martin that if it was easy I'd aim to open with it (240) at the Worlds, which are to be held in Milton Keynes on 11-13th November. So six months of loving the deadlift will take me there nicely. I want to be strong enough to be thinking of going 240-260-??? in the deadlift by then and I reckon it's a real possibility.
