Why do so many people feel the need to write the word "raw" in this context in capital letters when it is so clearly wrong to do so ?

I stand by RAW by way of emphasising.
It's very rare for people to lift RAW.
Most people wear a belt, which isn't RAW, but may be raw.
So there.

A new ULTRARAW classification has emerged from somewhere in the West Midlands.

For me personally - as a lifetime RAW lifter - it is annoying when someone posts a video of a lift saying "raw" this or "raw" that and straight away you see they are wearing a belt and usually wraps.

Life would be so much simpler if there was simply equipped and unequipped, unequipped being nothing at all and equipped being whatever the hell they liked with no distinction made for anything inbetween.

The present situation is very confusing because even raw does not mean unequipped, and unequipped means quite a few bits of equipment !

For me, anything that helps you lift more is equipment, and a belt helps you lift more. If you are going to wear anything that helps you lift more, you might as well wear everything available and be done with it.

Plus it would be very interesting to see what various people can lift without any equipment - how much of it is them and how much of it is the equipment. Some people could lose 50kg off a Squat if they took a belt off, for example, others might have a strong core and lose next to nothing.

Just my own opinion Happy

No one would lose 50kg off a squat without a belt lol..

This is the age old thing where people who don't use a piece of equipment like to pretend it gives those who do use it 10000kg to their lifts lol. Sumo will probably come up next, which btw gives me +200 on my deadlift Happy

ok my views:
equipped really means suited
unequipped really means unsuited but some equipment
RAW seems to mean something different to everyone but should mean no lifting aids at all, no belt/wraps/straps etc

however if someone titles a video RAW but is clearly wearing a belt or wraps or whatever what does it matter. we can all see they mean unsuited and obviously have a different idea of what RAW is, so it doesnt matter at all.

My opinion; if it's my video and I will call it whatever the f**k I want. Who really cares if a youtube video is mislabelled.

If you want a group of people to use one single definition then perhaps, I don't know, they could go and perform those lifts on the same day. Perhaps they could do that together at the same venue, in competition with each other. Now that would be something!

Edited - too many f**ks.

The definition of unequipped depends purely on what your governing body classes it as. IPF say 7mm single ply sleeves and a belt, others say otherwise. If I post a vid in 7mm sleeves and a belt, I'll title it unequipped if I lift with my federation.

Unfortunately we live in a world where there's no single universal powerlifting body, so while we can all argue about definitions, we have to accept there's no single one.
