To be fair to Ben i wouldnt say his sq has gone down in terms of strength, the reffing on sq depth was the strictest (unfairly in a lot of cases IMO) that i have ever seen at a nationals.

IIRC he only got his opener on his 3rd after being red-lighted for depth and/or technicals twice so he probably had more in him strength-wise than what his total suggests.

As soon as the bar left the floor I started shaking really badly.

I've learnt my lesson though, and if I can't start my warmup as soon as I'd like next time, I'll probably just skip my last set, if I'd done this it would've made a big difference to my day.

Shaking really badly you said it mate! Woody woodpecker as i described it to someone! Great, great fight with it though and another day it would have gone for sure. I think you are wrong, a win IS a win and to win a nationals as a junior is f**king s**thot. After I placed for the 1st time last yr with a total i was very unhappy with, i was exactly the same as what you are now though so i know exactly how you feel. Shame i wasnt lifting i would've fancied being a little ahead at subtotal, might have put some pressure on you for the pull and maybe you'd have nailed it if you knew you had to Wink

You are bang on with the warmup thing, i learnt that a while ago, you need someone with an eagle eye on the time, be prepared to take bigger jumps then what you do int gym and always remember that its better to finish a few mins too early and risk cooling down a bit than it is to have to follow your last warmup with your opener 30secs later or worse, get timed out ont opener (i have done both).

You were good mate & I fully expect you to be giving Rob Palmer a hard time next yr and probably leave the rest of us well behind. It were nice to meet you.

Dosn't mean he knows anything about supps. BA will not make your stronger. It's effect is to limit H+ accumilation during exercise. This will mean in practise prolonged sprinting style events eg 800 or repeated sprints with little rest.

I bow to Dr Beards chemistry knowlege, but Ive used BA a couple of times...I thought it was OK for giving you a little bit more endurance during long training sessions (i.e. over 2.5hrs). Not endurance as in i could do 5 reps where id normally get 3 but just as in feeling a little bit fresher from 1.5 hrs onwards if that makes sense.

If it was placebo than fair enough, the brainz is a powerful thing.

I did it last year on a stag do...s**t-HOT! Awesome atmosphere, the Basque spanish are well friendly and everyone gets totally s**tfaced and chucks sangria over each other for 7 days, 24hrs a day.

Makes a refreshing contrast to our claims/compensation/health and safety culture. Over there you can walk up to a compete stranger who is dressed in white and throw a pint of sticky purple sangria all over him, and not only will you not be battling but he will throw some back and give you a manly hug and a friendly smile.

I usually compete equipped although i did do a raw meet in May but in terms of the British etc. yeah equipped, usually at 82kg.

I train raw probably 95% of the time.

nico said:Ben, I know you've been sheikoing for a while now. You gave me a fair bit of info a while ago. I was wondering if you could go through your personal experience with Sheiko with the benefit of a couple of years of doing it.

How have your lifts progressed?
I think I ran my 1st Sheiko cycle mid way through 2008, i was probably good for 580ish at the time. Now I am probably good for 720ish on a good day with a following wind (i.e. after a run of unijured training).

I think the gains would have been a LOT more if:
a) I had understood or at least trusted the principles behind the programming from the start. Like everyone else i thought i knew better than one of the most sucessful powerlifting coaches of all time, and f**ked around with it to 'customise' it Roll-Eyes

b) Id had way more uninterrupted training...ive had a s**t year for injuries and havent gained much since Nov 09

What has been the big plus/minus of Sheiko for you?
Well the big plus is that it meks me stronger. Sounds right daft but I am not a natural born athlete and even for me to be average, like what i am now, has been a fair old slog. Now gains come even slower, but i KNOW without doubt that if i put a run of 12 wks solid training together (i.e. 2 prep cycles and 1 comp cycle) i will gain something on my total.

It also suits my wierdo OCD brain - I like understanding the maths/science behind the method and I work better if i have everything planned out before i get to gym and complete the planned workload even if it is rediculously brutal.

Cons are that the sessions take f**king ages, you are out of sync with your training partners who do 'normal' methods, you dont gain much muscle and that it kills you to death in terms of recovery and hormones balance and s**t. Quite often you make your best gains after you have been really beat up with bad sleep, no libido, pissed off all't time etc. - part of the principle is still training super high volume when you are very fatigued and forcing your body to adapt & get stronger I suppose. Probly part of the reason the ruskis do so well off it is that the whole team is on the special breakfast and recovers amazing.

What advice would you give to new Sheikoists?

1. Dont f**k about with it too much. The glorius comrades of the Soviet Union did tests on thousands of athletes and a lot of their best PLers have followed routines written by Boris and most people gain great off a stock cycle.

2. Be prepared to feel weaker from training, not stronger. The high volume & s**t means that weights that felt easy on wk 1 & look light on paper feel like a s**t-ton on wk 9 or whatever. A lot of people give up then cos they feel beat up and like their lifts are going down. Its not until you have peaked/deloaded that you see the gains

There is a lot of info about Sheiko, but the personal experience over a long period would be very interesting.

Hope that is what you wanted

but then you look at where he trains and who he trains with - and thats one f**king top notch camp world known for their conditioning and strength work.

mental issues play a big part i think, he just got carried away and banged everything in in one go.

Exactly...probably the best camp in the world? Definately the most athletic camo. The only other one near it is the secret beast-creating laboratory in Brazil where A.Silva, the Nogueria brothers and a load of other animals all called 'something Thiago' train.

Yeah i am a proper Sheiko nuthugger.

Customising Sheiko programs is not as easy as it seems, as the programming is based on waves of relative intensity against overall volume & your 'rating' on the russian PL scale, so unless you are an anal maths bod it is best to leave the main lifts alone, although you have some excersise selection choice on the assistance s**t.

Stick a question up on the Sheiko forum an you will get some good responses though, i will make sure i have a look anyway.

There is an IPF rule on this (known as the Ed Coan rule), but I'm pretty sure it is not enforced in the GBPF...never heard of if it has.

Maybe Fletty or Steve can confirm?

Give over gobs**te, i bet there is a video of you somewhere on Youtube downing 8 tubs of cottage cheese and ALMOST CERTAINLY falling over afterwards, or like dropping the spoon or something.

Love you

This thread has been very reassuring!
My main focus at the moment is driving my squat up, and that's going really well. I did a really easy 230kg for 5 yesterday, plenty of reps in the tank so I'm hoping to hit around 280 for the British if everything goes well. Please don't hold me to that though! Bench and deadlift are just ticking over at the moment, I need to start approaching them the same way I am with squats.
How are YOU looking for the British?

Looking like just taking a token sq and pull and going for a big bench matey. Blew my glassback out a while ago and havnt pulled at all in 6 wks and only sq'd up to 145. Gutted cos i was in form before that and was hoping for big pbs. Hey ho, part of the game.

Dont worry though one of my training partners Tony is looking in good nick so it won't be a procession!

Defo not illegal. We got a pic of Dan Austin on our gym wall squatting in an IPF worlds in what looks like the 70s/80s (Jerry curl ahoy!) with a thumbless grip.

Pretty sure Wade Hoop is/was thumbless too.

How are you looking for the british Tom?
