Sunday, 16th January, start 13:00

Bit of a change today, I shall use dumb-bells for sets of ten, standing shoulder press. A light week in all but name, weights in kilos

10 x 10
10 x 10
10 x 10
10 x 10
12 x 10
14 x 10
16 x 10
18 x 10
20 x 10
20 x 10
20 x 10
20 x 10
20 x 10

Phil the Behemoth joined us today which is always a pleasure, as is usual, off to the battle cruiser afterwards for some nosebag, a diet coke and a good old chat. Phil the Behemoth and Joe the Terrible are both splendid fellows and are well worth listening to. An excellent time was had by all. End 13:40 for the training and 15:00 for the nosebag.

Friday 14th January, start 15:45

Lockout from pin 12, all weights in pounds

154 x 10
254 x 5
354 x 5
398 x 5
420 x 5
420 x 5
420 x 5

The last few weeks I have been trying 450 ish and frankly it's been a shade too heavy so a little less weight for a few more reps seems reasonable

Deadlifts, kilos now

60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
140 x 5
180 x 3
220 x 3
220 x 3
220 x 3

Hands are very sore tonight and I'm not sure why, so not too much weight but made sure they were all pretty. Smooth and fluent we were looking for and we got it. No Rick or Joe the terrible tonight, Handsome Fred benched very well but then he usually does. End 17:30

Is there no temptation to throw 220 on and get a touch?

Not really. I would like to do a little more than just lie there and look at it

Wednesday, 12th January, start 17:00

Bench, raw, all weights in kilos

20 x 20
20 x 20
20 x 20
70 x 5
70 x 5
70 x 5
100 x 3
110 x 2
120 x 1
130 x 1

Shirt on courtesy of Joe the Terrible

160 x 3 3 blocks
180 x 2 2 blocks
190 x 1 1 block
try to chest now
200 x 1 didn't touch
205 x 1 didn't touch
210 x 1 didn't touch
190 x 2 didn't touch but second one was closer
180 x 2 didn't touch but second one was closer

Initially tried with Rick's belt which is longer and thinner, we decided that there wasn't enough surface area for sufficient grip so we changed to my belt which is shorter and broader, this worked better. We also had a major breakthrough on the 205 as I managed to get both hands on the bar unassisted. The lemon fresh contingent didn't understand why that got a round of applause, but the stinkin' section did. Even though these were all pressed off the hands they were all reasonable enough, except for the initial 200 which headed north and prompted the belt change. many thanks to DrRick, Joe the Terrible and Handsome Jeff, it's fun, it's an adventure and I look frorward to the day when I actually get to touch my chest.

It being Wednesday I headed for the home of the tubular bandage and the lovely Louise, because of an extra booking we started a little late tonight, because of this I hurled her against extra walls with more than usual force. It turns out she liles to be hurled against extra wall with more than usual force

My years at school were spent being hit with an assortment of implements and being told how stupid I was and how I would never amount to anything.

I am now a bitter, uneducated and rather dim person

"Did you get them done" asked the boss
"I did" I replied
"Singles then, up to 550, let's get used to them"

Squats, leotard and newly heeled boots. Weights in kilos

60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
100 x 5
140 x 5
wraps on
180 x 3
200 x 1
220 x 1
240 x 1
250 x 1

These were all a joy, the difference between the newly heeled boots and the block of wood is beyond measure, these were so deep that even a french referee who had caught me in bed with his wife could not have failed them. Smooth, deep, fluent and deep. Lovely, just what the Doctor ordered. Deep too.

Spotted for DRrick who had a new shirt on tonight, one of Handsome Fred's I believe. Beautiful presses, eveyone seem to be on form tonight. The only proble is that one again firefox is playing games and won't let me post, damnit. This comes courtesy of internet explorer. Why can't every thing be like squats End 18:20

Sunday, 9th January, start 13:00

Thermometer says +5 which goes along with what the car told me outside, feels colder though

Standing military press, all kilos

20 x 10
20 x 10
20 x 10
20 x 10
20 x 10
30 x 5
40 x 5
45 x 5
50 x 5
50 x 5
50 x 5
50 x 5
50 x 5

Oddly, these sets all felt different, some felt heavyish and awkward and others felt smooth and easypeasy. Not sure what the difference was, rest periods the same, hand spacing the same, pretty much everything the same except for the effort required, or maybe the perceived effort required. Scampi and chips and a diet coke afterwards and a good old chat, Joe and I will be in attendance at the British Bench later in the month. Team Adlington will be there in force. So that's something to look forward to.

Friday, 7th January, start 15:45

Pin 12 lockouts, all weights in avoirdupois

154 x 10
254 x 5
354 x 5
398 x 5
454 x 2
454 x 2
454 x 3

I find these quite awkward, the problem is kowing where on the lateral plane of the pins to start from, lose the line and start from the wrong place and the game is up. The first two were quite reasonable then I lost it and it stopped dead, same on the second set, on the third young Jake gave me some splendid advice, but I just got tired after three

Pin 10 lowers, still pounds

254 x 5
354 x 5
398 x 5

The last set were just too heavy and the bar was falling the last few inches, just as you reach the point where the shirt would normally start to take the strain. Still that is the point and as Tesco say, every little helps

Deadlift, raw, all kilos

60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
140 x 5
140 x 5
180 x 3
210 x 3
230 x 3
240 x 3

Made a bit of a meal of the first of the 240s but all the rest were sweet enough. One good point though after the nonsense I had with my grip last week, which involved murderer's gloves, straps and pinching bits of skin that are better left unpinched, this week all thorugh the workout the grip was a charm, not a hint of a problem, in fact I had to check that they were the same hands. Bit of banter with the chaps and then offski. Welsh Grand National tomorrow on the BBC and Sandown on C4. I also have to find a cobbler's and visit a splendid chip shop. There may also be a small blonde in there somewhere if I have anything to do with it.

It's madness as it appears to stand.

That has been around for decades but only recently did I discover that it is a backsquat programme for weightlifters and the 1RM that they are talking about is the most weight they can clean. Not what they can backsquat

Once you factor in that piece of information the whole thing makes a lot more sense
