It's madness as it appears to stand.

That has been around for decades but only recently did I discover that it is a backsquat programme for weightlifters and the 1RM that they are talking about is the most weight they can clean. Not what they can backsquat

Once you factor in that piece of information the whole thing makes a lot more sense

Wednesday, 5th January, start 17:00

Today is a good day, still cold and not many in, Taxi Mark, Jake, Joe the terrible, Jeff and handsome Fred

Bench, raw, kilos

20 x 20
20 x 20
20 x 20
70 x 5
70 x 5
70 x 5
100 x 3
110 x 2
120 x 2
130 x 1

Joe the Terrible very kindly assists with the shirt, still new, still tight and still kind get my second hand on the bar without assistance. All paused, all to blocks, most didn't quite touch

160 x 2 three blocks
180 x 1 three blocks
190 x 1 two blocks didn't touch
200 x 1 one block didn't touch
215 x 1 one block didn't touch
200 x 1 one block didn't touch

We're are getting there, the last four that didn't touch all missed only by the thickness of a cigarette or so, so all were pressed off fresh air, or from the hands as some call it, the benchers among you will be aware that this is more difficult than touching. All were pressed very nicely thank you except for maybe the 215 which was a tad slower than it should have been, but as it was 215 and therefore 10 kilos higher than my best ever legit bench I am not overly worried about that. One point to note was that the last 200 was as close as the 215 so the weight, although important is not as important as you think, It's all about bottle, about fearlessness, about confidence. I'm happy, Joe's happy, Alan's happy so that will do for me and the 215 didn't feel that heavy in my hands, and that will do for me, that will oh so do for me.

As it is Wednesday, I offed to oldham to let the new year in with girl number one, she then insisted that I hurl her against every wall in the place. Start as you mean to go on I say.

Lovely Jubbly as Delboy once said, a not that heavy 215 and a wall-slammed blonde. Happy days

Monday, 3rd January, start 14:30

Just a few dedicated lifters today, still cold.

Squat, raw, all kilos, heels still elevated

60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
100 x 5
140 x 5
wraps on and belt on
190 x 5
205 x 5
220 x 3
200 x 5

The local cobblers has shut down so I will have to venture further afield on Saturday, there are a couple in Bolton I'm told, we had a bit of a suprise tonight, as one squats, one exerts considerable downward pressure with the feet, the trouble with the block under the heel ploy is that the toes and the heels are on a solid foundation the centre of the foot is not, this caused discomfort in the quads at weights over 205 and caused some instability. Altogether quite unpleasant, I didn't push it and dropped the weight. This should cease to be an issue once I get the shoes actually done.

We adjourned to the White Bear only to discover that they were not serving food, so we legged it to the Waggon which has recently changed hands, Burger and chips with a side order of garlic bread and a diet coke and it was delicious. Especially the burger. I don't know if it was a big kahuna burger but it sure was a tasty burger. I suspect it is bye bye White Bear and hello Waggon. The waitress was along way from being ugly too, which is never a bad thing

30 x 5
40 x 5
45 x 5
45 x 5
45 x 5
45 x 5
45 x 5

A bit cold and creaky today, off the White bear afterwards for some nosebag and a chat, then off to r kids for some more nosebag and another chat. Can't beat food that someone else has cooked. Young Aaron graced us with his presence today. I wonder how long he will keep that up. I blame public transport

You never mention showering and brushing your teeth / soaking your dentures after you've trained, eaten your meat and potato pie and drunk your diet Coke before you head off to the home of the orthopedic stocking, or whatever you call it. Do you bother freshening up to any great extent at all, or do just keep a pack of baby wipes and some chewing gum in the car? Just curious.

There are limits to the amount of detail I am prepared to divulge. The place in question has a shower and I use that before and after, that is all.

Odd that my journal should make you think of oral hygiene. But I welcome all questions. My teeth are not removeable for the record.

Happy new year to you Colonel and to all my readers, may we all sail in calmer waters and with the wind at our backs next year.

Friday, 31 December, or new Year's eve as some call it, start 14:30

"before you start" says Alan " lets just try something" We put a bench in the power rack and set the pins to hole 12, this is the length of my hand from lockout, the idea is to lock it out from the pins.

Pin 12 lockouts, all kilos and raw

70 x 5
115 x 5
160 x 5
180 x 5

Now we drop the pins to hole 10, another hands length lower roughly, I am assisted to handoff position by two helpful fellows and from there I lock it out and then await a start command and then lower it to the pins

Pin 10 lowers, all kilos, still raw

90 x 3
130 x 3
160 x 3
180 x 3

Full bench, still raw, still kilos

140 x 1, lovely lower, could have been snappier

Deadlift, raw, all kilos

60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
140 x 5
180 x 3
220 x 3
230 x 3
230 x 3
230 x 3

onto blocks now, just below the knees

230 x 3
230 x 3
230 x 3
230 x 3

The lowers were harder than one would imagine and by the time 180 came around they were just a shade too heavy as they were dropping the last few inches or so, but it's new and things do improve quite quickly when they're new.

The deadlift bar has been changed. This one feel a little odd in the hands and there was some slipping and sliding in the hands, especially on the later sets off blocks, I tried using a strap on the right (over) hand but it heep pinching a bit of flesh about half way between the index finger and the thumb which was not fun and I don't believe it's happened before. DrRick leant me one of his murderer's gloves to ease it, which it did to a degree. Then the left (under) hand started slipping, which prompted cries of "girl" and "pussy" so I finished up doing double overhand, with straps and wearing one orange, murderer's glove. This caused some small laughter and calls of "Michael Jackson"

Sloped off around four, dropped Alan at home then off to Tesco for a bit of shopping, after this I will shower, have some nosebag and fall asleep in front of the TV
