Hi gents, thanks for the comments.

It's been great being in the gym over half term, the challenge will be to keep it up next week and beyond.

To describe this as "controversial and far from universally accepted" would be something of an understatement. It's been a flashpoint for debate, both for scientists and philosophers, for a very long time.

It's a fascinating one. For all the faults with mirror tests, for my money they do show that some animals have self-recognition. But I think there's a tendency for reductively-thinking biologists to conflate 'self-recognition' and 'self-awareness'. In my opinion, there is a lot more to self-awareness in the sense we usually mean it. TBH, I think it requires language.

Which leads me to agree with your observation on youtube comments. As these are largely only the written equivalent of grunting sounds, this leads me to think the many posters on there have not yet achieved self-awareness.

That's because the hats go nicely with the ties.

Not tall enough for rowing/swimming.

Too tall for PL unless I decide to become obese.

I wish I were either 5'8 or 6'3.

Mike Tyson is 5'11", if I remember correctly. Perhaps you could be a heavyweight champion boxer?

It's not even rare on this planet.
For life to exist all that is needed is for a planet to be in relatively the same position from it's sun as we are from ours for there to be a high likeyhood of liquid water. Where there is liquid water there is a good chance of life.

Again, I don't disagree with your conclusion, but I've quoted what I think is a major assumption on your part.

What evidence is there that the presence of liquid water means there is a 'good chance of life'? No. of planets known to have liquid water = 1. No. of planets known to have life = 1. So we don't know if the chances of life developing in the presence of liquid water are 100%, 50%, 1% or 0.0000000000000000000000000000000001%. I'm not convinced that 'scientific' attempts to estimate this percentage are anything more than guessing. As Rick put it, in summary, f**k knows.

I asked him about Ancient Astronaut Theory and he laughed a strange, robotic laugh that I'd never heard before. He then reminded me that I'd spent enough time with von Däniken's to realise that they were all a little mad to say the least.

I think that's being kind to von Daniken and co. Mad - no. Exploitative hacks, disingenuously trampling over serious archaeology - yes.

Not Icke, though. He's cut from a different cloth. Born without a bulls**t filter, he's doomed to osmotically absorb every crackpot theory ever conceived.

Rick said:There's certainly life out there imo; life arose so ludicrously early in Earth's history as to make it seem unlikely that it's in any sense a difficult thing to happen.

The problem with this argument is that we're extrapolating from a single case. If someone bought a lottery ticket and won on the same evening, he could conclude that winning the lottery wasn't a rare event at all(assuming he hadn't any contact with other lottery players).

I don't disagree with any of your conclusions, though. I think in particular the evolution of intelligence and self-awareness is probably rare - there are thousands of other evolutionary strategies for self-replicating that seem to have worked or much longer.

That's the one. In bodybuilding, maybe having a reputation as an ar****le is just another way of standing out from the line up.

His name is Sean Allen and is apparently well known for 'attitude'. Maybe it's his USP.

He is a seriously huge guy. Claimed stats are 6'4", 320lbs (145kg), 63" chest.

Steroids or not, bodyweight or not, it's still a lot of weight to be pressing in such a cavalier fashion.

So anyway.

For months, I've either been ill, or injured, or ill or injured, or had too much work on. I've been into the gym maybe once a week on average, which hasn't been enough to keep my strength (or weight) up.

On the positive side, since the last time I did my journal, I've learned how to make an excellent chicken pie.

Here we go, poundages much reduced, but hey-ho. The only way is up.

Beltless squats

Warm ups
130 X 3
150 X 3
160 X 3
170 X 2
180 X 1

Beltless front squats

100 X 3
110 X 3
120 X 3

Barbell curls

50 X 5
50 X 5
50 X 5
50 X 5
