» Can't deadlift for toffee (Go to post)16-01-2008 @ 18:05
Wednesday 16th Jan

Started back on deadlift training tonight, this time with the lifting straps consigned to the dustbin of history. I'm using a routine I found on here - Olly's maybe? I forget.

The weights will be light until my grip catches up with the rest of me. Then they won't be much heavier.

Deadlifts (80% 1 RM): 175 X 2,2,2,2,2
Deadlift off raised platform: 150 X 4
Gay hip assistance work: 2 sets X who knows
Chins (chest to bar, elbows retracted): 4, 4, 4, 4
Seated hammer curls 25s X 8,6,6

I've got an Athens Special Olympics cap, sent to me by a mate with a very wicked heart.

Mon 14th

Tonight I pinched my thumb between two plates I was loading, because I was looking at a girl with big breasts in a low cut top (she was in the low cut top, not me).

After 7 weeks of squatting every workout, I decided to give it a break today. In fact I'm going to go down to once a week and start including deadlifts once a week.

The program has served me well. The first squat session was 170 X 5 and the last-but-one was 187.5 X 5, which is a healthy increase.

Chest supported rows: 140 (well, that's what the machine says) X 4,4,4
Bench Press with pause: 130 X 3,3,3,3,3
DB lying triceps extension: 25s X 7,6,5
Abs
Grip work
» Who's bald? (Go to post)14-01-2008 @ 17:24
I'm reasonably bald and have been for years. Nevertheless, I have never got used to it: I'm astonished by every set of holiday snaps, and even the mirror is a daily shocker.

It's poetic justice, though. I spent most of my later teenage years yelling "you are a bald person" out of the car window at follicularly challenged pedestrians.

looking really strong there mate! You are repping your PBs like nothing Grin

Thanks, Joni. Yeah, I have to be very cautious about squatting near-maximal weights. I try to avoid any loads that I'm not 99.9% confident with. There usually isn't anyone around who can spot me effectively and some days there just isn't anyone within earshot. The perils of training in a commercial gym with a mixed clientele Happy

Thanks guys, that's reassuring.

Rob, it felt like my slightly lighter ones were deeper, but I don't know for sure as I'm only going on 'feel'. I've never seen myself squatting before today other than in a mirror.

Those Squats are excellent mate, no depth issues there at all.
P.S. Welcome to the forum.

OK great, thanks Dan.

Right, I've just added a video to my log of me squatting 187.5 X 2. I would be very interested in any comments about whether these squats would pass in a competition. Linky: http://sugdenbarbell.co.uk/forum.php?a=1190#39925

Saturday 12th Jan

OOps - edited to put weights into kgs.

Missed out seated DB press today as I can only just clean the 40s by myself and there was no one there capable of lifting one up for me. I could have asked the gym manager, but seeing as I don't have a pair of breasts, he is reluctant to expend any energy helping me.

Hips and ankles are now definitely suffering from squatting three times a week. I think I need some squatting shoes.

Squats 187.5 X 2,2,2,2,2
Seated hammer curls 25s X 8,7,6
Lying DB tricep extensions 20s X 8,8,8
Static hold with bar 4 sets
Pinch grip lifting 1 set
HEX DB hold 1 set.

Here's a vid of the third set of squats - I'm not quite getting the depth that I was at 170-180, but I think it's OK. Any pointers welcome. Can I point out that I look like a fat bas***d for, er, some other reason other than me actually being a fat bas***d. Honest.

Thursday 10th.

This seemed to take forever. I've been squatting three times a week for the past five weeks or so and gone from 170 X 5 to 185 X 5. ut I think I'm starting to top out on this - I was struggling to get five. Also, my hips are starting to suffer (in terms of pain, rather than appearance). Still managed to go very deep, however.

Squats - worked up to 185 X 5

Bench Press (paused) 130 X 2,2,2,2,2

Seated military Press (80 degree incline on Smith): 110 X 4,4,4,4

Face pulls "12" X 9,9,9

Farmer's walk with embarrassingly small DBs

Hello, me too, other end of the treadmill though.

Creatine does bump my weight up a few pounds, but it makes me look a bit fuller and more muscular. I'm pretty sure I'm stronger when I'm on it, too.

I don't think it's necessary to load on it - I just take 5g every day and I can see results from that after a couple of weeks. Once I'm on, I'll take 5g maybe three times a week. I do cycle off it every so often.

I gave it a good go when it first came out years ago. I didn't notice any effects at all. If I remember correctly, a lot of people were getting similar results i.e. nothing.

HMB is an example of a supplement that looks promising from research evidence but which has failed to deliver in 'real life', in my opinion.

I always want supplements to 'work', but out of the zillions I've tried, only creatine, sesathin and ECA type products have had any definite effect.
» The Adlington puddle (Go to post)09-01-2008 @ 20:23
There's a boating lake sized puddle in our gym car park, too, I wonder if it's catching on nationally. Also, we have one of those comedy paving slabs that squirts very cold water up your leg when you tread on it.

Oh yes, it's a disappointing series when you don't hear that at least once.

I seem to remember a one-off broadcast of a world strongwoman event a few years back. The commentary on that was truly apalling. I don't get too worked up about sexism usually, but jeeez, the total lack of respect for the competitors on that one was breathtaking.
