Easy squatting

Suits are f**king horrible to squat in, there is no doubt about that!

Do you even think you need to use one? I probably squat 20-30KG less than you (max), but I reckon I could get close to/make double figs with wraps only at 240?

I'm not sure I will use one (which is why I'm testing it out in training). I'm fairly sure I could do 240KG x 10 in wraps, but suspect there's 12-15 reps there with the suit. Will get 1 or 2 more heavy squat sessions in then decide on the day.

Okay…I’m typing this as I carefully nurse my scars from the last few days!

I took 3 days off training in preparation for Britain’s, partly because I camping in Cornwall and partly because my body needed it!
I weighed in at 108.8KG first thing Friday morning, a restricted diet and 5 hours of sweating on my way up to Lancaster left me at 104.6KG by the time I weighed in at 12PM Saturday.

Comp day

All that resting left me feeling fresh when I woke up on the Sunday, a small breakfast and I was ready to go!

Event 1 – Log press medley (110KG, 120KG, 130KG, 140KG, 150KG) – 1st place

Press all 5 logs (in order) as fast as possible. I knew that a fast 4 logs would be enough for victory in this event. So that’s exactly what I did! The first 4 went up in about 45 seconds, however I made really hard work of it, my timing was slightly off and I struggled to hold the 130 and 140 at lock out. I should have finished all 5, but the problems with the 3rd and 4th logs left me a little more fatigued and my head was never in it when I finally attempted the 150KG.

Event 2 – Power stairs (190KG, 195KG, 202.5KG up 5 steps) – 2nd place

Pick up and load all 3 implements onto the top of 5 steps. Every competitor managed to complete this event, so it came down to who could do it the fastest. I was last to go and knew what I had to beat, I loaded all 3 to the top without any mistakes as fast as I possibly could. It turns out that wasn’t quite fast enough for 1st place, I was beaten into 2nd by 0.01 of a second! I don’t know how Damo managed it, but he thoroughly deserved his victory in this event.

Event 3 – Farmers and sled drag medley (132KG farmers for 25m and 230KG sled drag for 25m) – 1st place

Carry both farmers along the 25m course, grab the sled handle and drag it back to where you started. This is the sort of event I love, an nice blend of strength, speed and endurance. I was fast with the farmers and the only person to finish the drag without stopping resulting in a comfortable winning margin in this event. It was tough, but perfectly judged in terms of weight and distance.

Event 4 – Axle squat (240KG for reps) – 1st place

Unrack and squat with the axle as many times as possible in 75 seconds. Again I was last to go in this so had the advantage of knowing what to beat. The current standings left me needing 9 reps for 2nd place or 13 reps for 1st place. I was confident of doing 13, but was planning on doing 9 and saving myself for the next event. However that all changed when I unracked the axle and started squatting, I’m not sure exactly at what point but I got to 9 reps and kept going. I managed the 13 reps with maybe 1 or 2 more in the tank, but this resulted in a massive leg “pump” and a good few minutes lying down.

Event 5 – Frame deadlift (7 reps with 25KG extra weight added after each rep) – 1st place

I had recovered from the previous event about 2 minutes prior to starting this one! The weight was estimated at being 250KG -330KG in roughly 15KG increments. 5 or 6 guys had finished the 7 reps by the time it came around to me. I pulled all 7 as fast as I possibly could for a time of 18 seconds and a 3 second winning margin.
I injured my back on this very frame almost exactly 12 months ago, so I was dreading this event. Luckily everything turned out okay this time round, no such problems this year, thank god!

Event 6 – Atlas stones ( 5 stones 110/120/135/160/175 to a 48″ platform) – 1st place

The first 4 stones had to be carried varying distances before they could be loaded. Myself and overall second place Seb were the last pairing to compete head to head on the stones. Seb was faster with the first 4 stones, but just missed the last stone, I took things a little slower and made sure of loading all 5, I was the only person to do so resulting in my 5th event win of the day.

Overall – 1st place

Very pleased with my performance, even more pleased to be crowned Britain’s strongest man 105. However I’m never 100% happy, the only disappointment was my log pressing, I know I am capable of doing better.

Bonus event! – Max dumbbell press

One of the event sponsors organised for a max dumbbell lift to be held at the end of the contest. This was open to everyone, competitors, spectators, loaders and anyone else who wandered into the sports hall. I had no idea this had been arranged and even less interest in taking part after a brutal 6 events. However a small amount of persuasion and my competitive nature got the better of me! Long story short, I managed a 105KG single arm dumbbell press for a PB and another event win.

Thanks bud, I'm 105 for a good few years yet, no desire to get fat! I will however try my hand at a few open comps next year.
