I don't think that being a good oly lifter makes you a good strongman, they are very different sports, offering little in the way of carryover. Most strongmen push press, so even jerks are largely pointless.
In gerneral I don't think there is much point in doing the full olympic movements unless you plan on doing olympic lifting.
However I think power cleans (power snatch to a lesser extent) should feature in every strength athletes programme. The explosive power they generate is superior to any other lift.
The oly lifts (along with varations of them) have been and always will be a big part of my training, they can help with certain aspects of strongman, but they arent the answer to being a good strongman.

I agree with hat 100%

I'm learning the Olympic lifts because I want to learn the Olympic lifts - I'm under no illusion they'll make me a better strongman.

The power variations, as you say, are great exercises for every athlete though.

Really? I notice that most of the biggest pressers in U105 use jerks rather than push presses on logs and axles. Interestingly very few of the guys in WSM use jerks I notice.

Interesting that you think that about power cleans, I'm going to start doing them regularly again now.

A few 105's do jerk (myself included) but as you rightly point out next to non of the pros do.
Personally I only jerk the log/axle because I had already invested 10 years of training in it before I started strongman. If I or someone else were starting from scratch I would suggest they focus on push pressing (mainly because that's the way all the top guys choose to lift)
However it does work for some people, if you're one of them, its something worth training.

I've updated my blog with today's session, but its mainly running, jumping, stretching and kettle bell work, no heavy weights to be seen.

Cheers bud, was great to meet some new faces from the icy north! I don't think we'd struggle for support if we started a plot to eliminate those sandbags from any future comp.

I know! But don't fear, efforts are already being made to turn them into a thing of beauty.

Not much training today, a little rowing, some bench for George and a poor performance at a local athletics comp this evening.

Updated blog with a semi-decent session on Thursday, did enough to make it worthwhile but not so much to affect today's comp.

Today's write up from journal.

England's most powerful man 105 (day 1)

Weighed in early doors, been a while since I've made 105 for same day weigh-in, wasn't much fun! So spent all morning hanging around, eating, drinking and helping with a few bits and pieces.

Event 1 - 120 log for reps (2nd place)

We were told it was reps from the chest, came as a surprise to most of us. But its still a 120 log and you still gotta press it!
Was 6th to lift in this event, Toby was leading with 6 reps. I figured Sean would do one more than anything I did so did a fairly comfy 7 and left it with a few reps still in the tank.

Event 2 - 140KG farmers - 15m (ish) (1st place)

4 of the first 6 finished the course, all with at least 1 drop. Figured i'd take it a tad slower, as the grass was a little uneven. No idea of my time, but was only person to finish without any drops at a semi-decent pace.

Event 3 - Last man standing deadlift (1st place)

240KG, 260KG, 280KG, 300KG, 320KG, 330KG, 340KG, 350KG. Dane pushed me all the way to the 350 with some very impressive lifting. Very high standard overall with a lot of big PB's for people. Might have had another lift in me, but was very glad I didn't need to put that to the test!

Good day, smooth comp, with a good crowd and VOS on the mike. As usual great bunch of guys competing. Saw about 10 minutes of the sun, which was enough to leave me with a burnt face!

So, another 2 hour car journey to start the day and there I was back in Kent to complete what I'd started yesterday. No shortages of food, drink or sleep left me feeling much better than yesterday.

Event 4 - 247.5KG squat for reps (1st place)

Victory in yesterdays dead lift meant I was last to go in the squat. There were 7 very strong guys up before me and they made it look tough! Most managed somewhere between 1 and 3 reps, so by the time it came around to me I knew 4 would be enough to win it. If I was squatting in the gym, I would have felt very confident at this point, however squatting on a piece of plywood on uneven ground is a totally different story. I did a solid 4 reps but it felt 50% harder than I'd expected!

Event 5 - Stone carry for distance (1st place)

Pick up and carry a T shaped stone weighing 150KG as far as possible! Going last is a big advantage in these sort of events, I knew exactly what everyone else had done and did precisely one meter more than the current leader to secure my second event win of the day. The stone was awkward, rough, the edges were sharp and you had to rest it on your chest which made breathing very hard...however for some unknown reason I enjoyed it!

Event 6 - Keg toss (1st place)

Toss 6 kegs over a bar approx. 4m high, the kegs weighed 12-16KG. One of my favourite (best) events, again I was last up and knew I was capable of securing my 5th event win of the competition. Things went well and I managed all 6 kegs faster than anyone else. Great way to end the day.

5 event wins and 1 second place was enough to earn me a comfortable victory and retain my title of England's most powerful man 105.

Was a great comp, very different events to last weekend (apart from the keg toss!) and a small but very good field of athletes. Some very impressive performances from everyone involved. Well done to everyone, especially those who qualified for UK's strongest man 105.
