This idea has been floating around in my tiny brain for some time.

If you gradually trained yourself to hold your breath for a longer and longer duration, do you think it could give you any noticeable improvement to your performance during anaerobic activities (e.g. strongman)?

On a similar subject, aren't free-divers amazing? Happy

Don't all rush! I guess I don't need to patent the idea then! Grin

You'd maybe have to take it to an extreme to see any benefits?

If you tested a free-diver's endurance on land would they perform amazingly well?

LOL, its just a silly idea wayne. Just like altitude training I suppose but its not ever been proven. Part of the problem with it is the reduced intensity when training - do it for long enough and you may not be able to work at higher intensity.

why would they?

they hold their breath for ages, they don't run a marathon while doing it

this coming from the man who never does more than one rep in training Wink

They swim while holding their breath for several minutes. Their bodies have obviously adapted to function with less oxygen. Surely they wouldn't gasp for breath if you asked them to go for a run?

I'm not talking about running a marathon, but surely they'd perform very well in endurance tasks?

Their bodies have learned to function in a very low oxygen situation, they dont swim at a fast pace though - most endurance training is based upon moving as much oxygen to the muscles as possible. Training with oxygen is much more efficient than without. Most endurance athletes rate fitness against MVO2 - the amount of oxygen you can use per minute.

I am guessing that freediving involves extremely efficient movement. It would be low intensity and, therefore, aerobic in nature. The diving would be all about wasting as little oxygen as possible and being able to tolerate higher levels of CO2 in the bloodstream, as it is rising CO2 levels that cause the urge to breath.

I know they hyperventilate before diving to "blow off" CO2 and start the dive with a reduced CO2 level so they have a larger capacity to accumulate CO2 before they have the urge to breath.

I may be talking nonsense but I think that despite the obvious lack of available oxygen in the water, their activity is aerobic in nature and not helpful to your strongman activities.

It is an interesting topic though and I hope I am wrong and that you can train simply by watching blue planet holding your breath.
