Great stuff Rick, I'd say a 200kg platform deadlift should put you nearer to 220kg from the floor than 200kg. Go for it!!

I fully intend to Grin. Funnily enough 220 is the exact same number Olly mentioned...

Thanks for all the encouragement, guys! I may be on the long road to not sucking at deadlifts at last.

I think when I go for the PB my first shot will be not 200 but 205, since I REALLY want 450lbs and 500kg total. After that, we'll see what we'll see!

I'm thinking 140 180 205 big one(s) Grin.

Rick if I'm in on the Friday night I'm sure I can bring Sugden TV to catch you smashing your PB to pieces.

If you participate in the Sugden Salford meet then maybe you could go up to an easyish PB in the gym and then go for a really big one at the meet.

Rob - if the S/Sal meet is that weekend I probably won't pull at all on the Friday!

Sunday 4/3

Coan bench week 3.

Bench 20x8, 60x5, 80x3 (all paused), 97.5x8x2 (first reps paused).

Close-grip Bench 85x8x2.

Incline Bench 80x8x2.

All very easy.

Partial chins 3x5. Pretty good today.

Wide Seated Rows 119x10x3. Fairly strict, very easy. This is the stack.

Stretching, shouting at SBBers squatting, home.

Nice one. Strip that lard off and you'll be chinning 60kg before me.

I need to start back dieting properly again, comp or no comp. The chaos and disruption to my schedule (parents' evenings, concerts etc) ends next Tuesday; so that's probably a signal to start eating clean once more.

Disruption this week means I'll be doing squat and bench assistance Thursday instead of Wednesday, deadlifting Saturday dammit I hate that, and benching Monday night (aargh!) before returning to usual.

If the Salford/Sugden fixture is to go ahead two weeks on Sunday, then I *think* I will:

* train as normal up to the planned deadlift max day (Friday week), on which I will probably
* pull only 205 to give me 500kg and 450lbs, leaving plenty in the tank for the comp
* bench and squat up to something that feels like a sensible opener on the Sunday or maybe Monday.
* very light bench and squats on the Wednesday
* comp

Is this sensible? I need to discuss numbers with my coach, too. Olly?

Thursday 8/3

A day late - playing in a concert on Tuesday (at school, nothing exciting), and seeing Journey last night. Disruption, but with good reason.

Squat Goblet 35x5, barbell 70x5, 100x5, 130x5x5 PB.

Eventful. On the fourth set, just before the last rep, a skinny kid took it on himself to come over and spot me. I said "leave it!" and went for the rep, but he came in and almost touched me anyway after I started it. I ended up shouting "LEAVE IT!" about three inches after getting out of the hole, which improved my form and mood no end.

As usual, these started difficult and got steadily easier as I remembered things I wasn't doing with each set.

DB press 17.5x8, 35x5x5.

Bench 60x5 paused, 80x10x2.

Wide pulldowns 70x8, 112x10x2. Used straps for these, rather sloppy form, so not counting as the PB it would otherwise be.

Narrow seated rows 119x10x2. Not as good as Sunday.

Stretching, home.

Thanks, man. I was very pleased - but the jump next week will be to 132, not 135!

I knew there was more than one event in the eventfulness, but couldn't remember what the other one was until Jonny's log reminded me...

On the fifth squat set, during the second rep, on the way up I unexpectedly farted very loudly. I then had to pause at the top for a good five seconds of constant, vigorous, loud gaspumping. And then a couple of seconds to make sure I wasn't going to laugh.

It made absolutely sure that nobody was going to come in and spot me THIS time, though.

Saturday 10/3

Deadlifts 60x8, 100x3, 140x1, 170x1x5.

These started badly - felt light, as you'd hope, but so slow. Before the fourth set, I realised I was set up too far from the bar, and so the last two were better.

I may have mentioned a time or two before how much I hate deadlifting on Saturday afternoons.

Rack pulls 100x2, 140x2, 180x2, 210x1, 227.5x0.

Not even a fail. Loaded it, set up with it, pulled everything tight and walked away. I need to have been awake for a full day and been eating right (or at least enough) for this s**t.

Partial chins 5x3. These were really rather good. Supersetted the last three with

French press 30x8,10, 40x8. I'm liking these.

Narrow-grip pulldowns 112x10x2. In complete contrast to Thursday, these were solid and easy.

Stretching and out.

Looks like I'll be training at Adders on Monday. One of the staff today basically told me that while he hoped there'd be a flat bench at the Sugden by Wednesday, there was essentially no chance of it being back on Monday. And I need to bench. That's an omen, that is.
