Sunday 25/2

Coan bench week 2.

Bench 20x8, 60x5, 80x3, (all paused), 92.5x10x2 (first reps paused)

Close-grip Bench 80x10x2.

Incline Bench 20x5, 75x10x2. These were really easy this week, now I have learned the movement.

All these were with a crap bar. I've just had to learn where to put my hands relative to the wrongly-placed rings too. Hey ho.

Partial chins 3x5. Not great, not horrible.

Wide Seated Rows 112x10x3. Strictish and remarkably easy.

Easy session, but satisfying not least because I got all the benching done pretty quickly. My rests are way too long (especially on squats).

Incidentally, somebody nearly f**ked up the one currently-present good bar today. Some twonk had been using it for what I suspect he called squats (3" curtseys) up to 140kg, and left it at that on the squat rack. Then the next dickhead, complete with hat and hoodie, unloaded all the plates from one side. *crash*, cue flying bar.

It also seems that, judging from audience reactions and questions, currently the most impressive thing I do is my partial chins Happy.

Not best pleased with this foot - seems that a couple of days of teaching have not helped it much, not entirely surprisingly.

Will definitely be training tomorrow, pressing, benching, and latting as scheduled and squatting at least somewhat - "heavy" squats are contingent on whether I can get my foot into my oly shoes without actually crying.

Wednesday 28/2

Squat Goblet 30x5, barbell 60x5, 100x5, 125x5x5 PB.

I've done 120x6 (though not as deep as these, which were Proper), but never repped anything higher for five or more. I got a spot for the first set, because I felt like crap and thought I might dump them; in fact all five sets were easy, much easier than last week.

Two big differences: firstly I did the first three of each set on one breath per squat, and secondly I really watched my rest periods. Did the lot in under 45 minutes, which is around half what I took last time.

DB press 20x8, 32.5x5x5.

Bench 60x8 all paused, 80x10x2 first rep paused.

Wide-grip pulldowns 70x8, 105x10x2. Not very strict, but pleased with this. Pretty sure it's a PB.

Narrow seated rows 112x10x2. Easy peasy.

20 minutes stretching and off. My foot hurt far less at the end of the session than the start, which is interesting.

I consider it a tribute to my uselessness at squats that my 1RM is only 15kg higher than yours when you do 125x5x5 for a PB and I do 125x5x8 three times a week, each in 20 minutes, and call it easy.

It will depend on the outcome of the peaking phase of course, but I'm considering doing the 3x3 volume phase again with +10kg weights. 135kg for 8 sets of 5 three times a week - got to be some progress out of that!

Actually what I think it mainly tells you is that I should have been squatting 5x5 a long time ago - though admittedly I think I'm good for more than 160 now.

I want to push this to 140x5x5, really, and then peak for a nice big single.

Good stuff Richard. We should be on for a nice squat race in the next few months all being well.

Tokar, I think you suck at heavy squats because you hardly ever do them. Might be something to think about.

I have tried training squats much heavier and I might yet go back to it. In the past it's worked well for a short time and then led to injury or other overtraining. It's certainly not something I haven't considered.

Rob - I'm definitely up for some friendly competition on squats and deads - and you'll be chasing me down on bench before long too, I reckon.

Might have to start learning power cleans when my foot heals, too...

Friday 2/3

Jackson deads week 7. All deadlifts with crappy fat bar.

Deadlifts 60x8, 100x3, 140x1, 170x1, 190x2x2 PB.

Grip went a little on the first double, but I concentrated better on the second. These were easy.

My PB from the floor is 195. Not for long - especially after:

Platform deads 100x2, 140x2, 170x1, 190x1 PB, 200x1 PB!!.

Was thinking of pulling 195, but Adam told me to be a man. It was not a max, though it wasn't easy. Didn't feel heavy, but it was a long old pull.

French press EZ+30x10, 10, +40x8. Haven't done these in years and years. Felt pretty good.

Partial chins 3x5. Not bad.

Narrow-grip pulldowns 105x10x2.

Stretching, home, happy just a little.
