normal people, like me. Member 2325, 550 posts | Just read about this chap. 19 years old, took up discus last year because he fancied having a crack at getting into the Olympics. Played on the wing in the Daily Mail schools rugby final last year, his old school are funding him this year to train as a full time athlete. He says his technique isn't great, but he's recently thrown 67.63m, which is one of the better throws this year apparently. Anyway, he's 6'6", 20st 5lb and claims to run the 100m in 11sec. - that's him benching 170x3 pretty comfortably

Member 2407, 219 posts | That is totally awesome. I can't beleive how powerful he is. If he can stay injury free and avoid the temptation of rugby he could be a world beater.

We have a 18 year old lad who if we took him out of rugby and trained him as a pure strength athlete could be a powerlifting champion. Squatting 210x3 high bar with average tekkers Some freakishly strong and talented rugby players out there who are limitted by the physical demands of pro rugby.

In a way, as long as he has hands and wasn't aimlessly shoved on the wing, I'd like to see him back to rugby after the Olympics. He might be best at wing, but the days of Lomu running over Catt have gone, instead I'd prefer him at lock or 8. Him and Courtney Lawes would be a big, properly athletic, locking partnership. He could be given license to seagull a bit at times. There are probably more than a few lads who never make it as pro's who dominated age grade because they were physical freaks. Should be identifying them for track and field etc.

Mighty young Joe Member 675, 2271 posts SQ 272.5, BP 180, DL 275727.5 kgs @ 114.8kgs UnEq | he's got the uk record and is currently out at the euro u23's. thats rubbish about the only doing just taking up discus, he's being doing it for a while. Think after 2012 he's purely playing rugby.

9x WSM finalist! Member 662, 3372 posts | I know i am a bit biased but would love to see someone of that physical ability playing rugby! A serious question, which would earn him more money? being a top rugby player on 150000 per year with sponsorship deals appearances etc ontop or being a gold medalist as a discus thrower?

normal people, like me. Member 2325, 550 posts | Joseph - re-reading the article it does imply it took it up recently, but another reading could be that he only got top level coaching in the last year or so. Terry - there probably are the odd one or two players of that raw physical ability playing rugby, but maximal strength will be impacted by needing to be able to keep up with the game. There's a chap called Sam Herrington who was with Gloucester, he had a few u23 discus titles, but has dropped down to Dudley and back up Coventry according to rugbystats and is part time (like all of Coventry I think) He's still young though, might come back up.
