Ages ago I started a thread on MT, asking people what they thought Mr Untrained Average could manage on "The Big Three". It was a popular and interesting thread (Cool ), so let's have a go here! Let's add shoulder press to the list too.

What do you think the 1 rep max would be for Mr Untrained Average for the following lifts....?

Squat
Bench press
Dead lift
Strict press

All lifts are RAW, of course! Happy

From what iv seen,
squat 60kg once they figure out how to go parrolel,
Bench, usially around 35kg
Deadlift, around 110kg
Strict press, maybee around 20kg
But to be fair all this has been from people around my age (17) so they were pretty weak

If you got 100 untrained men of average bodyweight to max out on these lifts and took averages what figures roughly would be obtained in your opinion?

I was thinking something like....

65
50
110
35

65kg and 110kg for bench and dead would be too high for an average figure I think.

Untrained and with no technique i think it would be more 40kgs and 60-80kgs.

Mr Average.

I'd say.....

Bodyweight squat
3/4 bodyweight BP
1 1/3 Bodyweight DL
1/2 bodyweight strict press

varies wildly

at the Scottish team comp a few weeks ago, I saw 3 untrained woman try 70kg farmers, 2 couldn't move them, the 3rd took them 40m like they were bags of shopping

I reckon i've trained hundreds of mr untrained average over the years so i feel i can give a decent estimate.
Firstly though there's a whole world of a difference between what someone will lift and what they are actually capable of lifting, most untrained individuals will be capable of lifting more than their lack of technique, confidence etc will permit them to.
Also most people, bear in mind we're taking mr average and not some one that's ever done a gym lift will be very uncoordinated and more likely buckle forward doing a squat, lift entirely with their back on a deadlift and bounce a bar off their chest on the bench. For this reason i aways start people off with easier to execute exercises that they are less likely to injure themselves on.
Although most estimates of mr average give the example of a 70kg man,in my experience body weight doesn't always make a great deal of difference in an untrained individual.I've had guys in their thirties at 6ft 5 and 25 stone that could lift less than a 4ft 10 female client.I'm talking about someone that's been sitting at a desk for years not a manual worker.Any way from my experience if we are talking about say mr average being a guy in his thirties that has a desk job and has never trained then he would be able to do in the region of 40-50kg bench,50-60 kg squat and 60-70kg deadlift, and 30-40 overhead.
I'd imagine to most on here those figures sound shockingly low but that is what in my opinion a mr average office worker is capable of in his first attempt.

defo depends on the individual.

i had a really skinny mate who only just managed 2 reps on 30kg bench where when my missus tried for fun she got 3 reps on 40kg.

first time i tried deadlift with awful form at about 75kg bw i managed 150kg but prob had some strength from old hobbies like boxing and rugby.

Regarding the women with the 70 kg farmers walk, an ex of mine came to train with me once and i was gobsmacked when she did 3 reps with 50 kg on the bench, and picked up the 50 kg dumbell i was using for benching up in one hand.

She was a big girl though, 5 foot 10 probably 12 stone.

a 16 year old mate of mine who's never trained before managed a 120kg deadlift, a 30kg bench and a 40kg push press all with s**t technique and at about 70kg bodyweight earlier this week.

another 16 year old mate of mine who similarly has never trained before only managed a 100kg deadlift, but did a 40kg bench for reps and a 40kg push press also at about 70kg bodyweight however he is relatively short and his bodyfat levels are higher.

SO what this extremely extensive and detailed research tells me is that everybody is different ... Roll-Eyes Grin
