Ok so as some of you may know I am a Personal Trainer, I also own quite alot of my own strongman equipment, so I thought great idea i'll hold a strongman event pick up a few clients and have a good time. It would be a first timer comp because alot of the competitors would come from my gym hopefully which is a david lloyd, but it would be obviously open to anyone on here. So my question is what sort of things do I need to think about before going about holding this competition? What should the weights be? I have yoke, farmers walk, wooden log (IFSA spec), axle bar, 2 regular bars, 2 atlas stones, 185kg and currently making a lighter one, a bunch of random rocks and junk that I can use for a medley or loading and rope for a pull. Any help is much appreciated

I'd say if it's mainly aimed at regular gym goers and to increase intrest from clients I'd keep it simple and 'classic' in terms of events

oh

deads

loading

arm over arm

grip

I'd also make it fairly light as not to intimidate. Almost cross fit style. 70 axle c+p for reps say

I wouldn't aim it at first timers who are on here as they may destroy and embarass if you know what I mEan

One thing that is key to holding a comp IMO is a good team of helpers/loaders (even if it is lighter weights)

Yeh I thought that which is why i stated its really for the average gym goer, but as i said if anyone is a proper first timer then get involved when I finally get it up and running

sandbags are easy to make and sandbag run + over yoke makes an excellent event , really tiring with the bonus of no tacky

i know its not 'strongman' but i did bodyweight deadlift for reps in 1 minute at a comp and everyone really enjoyed watching that ..

Yeh that kind of stuff would be perfect, I reckon my manager might throw some sponsorship in, and although this is an idea to increase my business it should also get strongman a little more recognized

first things to think of are the logistics of holding a comp. so venue, costs, how much help you'll need and where to get it from and transport of equipment etc. if youve got all that covered you can start thinking about who the comp is aimed at and then what the events and weights should be. good planning in the early stages will make it alot easier in the long run imo.

no one has ever had one.

Thats why they invented disclaimer forms Grin

about the original question, designing the events is the easy and most fun bit (which is why so many people who think about setting up a comp start with them), but i would rather start with deciding what is the target group of competetors, what is the setting for it, does the floor, room, inside/outside, tacky, no tacky etc limit the events, what equipment is available, loaders and spotters (the most important people), how quick are events to reset, how long are you thinking the comp to last (usually difficult to estimate but there are ways to calculate approx times)...

in fact it seems like i just said what willsan said but a bit longer Grin

For competitors suffering occupational hazard-type injury perhaps, but a disclaimer won't absolve an organizer of responsibility in the event of negligence and spectators and helpers are never asked to sign these. Getting people to sign forms to get around not arranging something that is a legal responsibility rarely stands up.

It is a mistake for organizers to continue to overlook this and another reason to form a fed, so it can be taken care of on an annual basis.

USA?

Even more reason for organizers to insure themselves.
