Having the machine factor in wind etc to simulate a course is pretty cool. Although I reckon it'd lead a few people to push themselves too hard too often. I was surprised how close Best Bike Split was able to get on time even with just ftp, type of bike setup and course. It would be interesting to play with it a bit. What's a Kickr Element do? I must now read if I need one. Vectors are starting to look very cheap for two sided power.

And I'm in no way advocating lots of threshold work. I think lots of people do far too much threshold work in an attempt to increase ftp. I think high intensity cycled with tempo/recovery work is a much better way of making long term progress without driving yourself into the ground. When you need to push the running you alter the balance cycling so it's more recovery and tempo than high intensity, and vice versa when focusing on the bike. That's how I'd train anyway:

Joe Friel in his book Fast over Fifty also stresses the importance of keeping the high intensity work in all the time as it is the easiest to loose and very difficult to regain as you age. Perhaps that's why I dislike doing it so much!

Nothing left in the tank. Member 5, 25569 posts Administrator | wouldn't it be great to all be in the same race ! my final result bumped my into the B category with a 3.4 w/kg there is an ultegra stages power meter for sale on the cycle selling page on facebook (brand new) for £440 , if I hadn't used my stash to pay off my visa bill, I would buy it !! had a look at my ironmanUK leg and the 'estimated power average' from strava was 147 watts , which is surprisingly low , I paced the bike all wrong - powering up the climbs (showing off) and I was ZERO aero !! now I got me a fancy helmet there is no stopping me

Eat.Cycle.Sleep.Win Member 2, 12511 posts SQ 190, BP 150, DL 280620.0 kgs @ 99kgs UnEq Administrator | I would pay no attention at all to that. I think it had me at about 210 going up the mortirolo when I was going delirious and could barely see. I could sit up and do a crossword at 210 watts.

Eat.Cycle.Sleep.Win Member 2, 12511 posts SQ 190, BP 150, DL 280620.0 kgs @ 99kgs UnEq Administrator | That's not entirely accurate. I can't do crosswords.

nothing to hide, please follow my life on webcam Member 255, 3732 posts | Yes there definitely seems to be some variation in Strava's estimates - I don't know if you can display the estimate and actual power (I've never managed to) but when I've compared to what I'd expect based on similar rides sometimes it can be very close to what I would expect and sometimes way out.

My average power was under 200 watts whilst my nominal power was over 240watts. When it came to the run I was struggling to put one foot in front of the other. This year I tried to keep my power within about 10% of my target if at all possible on the hills. My average power was about 5 watts higher, but my NP 20 watts lower. My legs felt "great" on the run

If I can get the bloody thing to work I will use it. I think it makes a bit difference - it reminds you that you really need to take it very, very easy up the hills and gives you the occasion dig to keep pushing on the flats and downhills. So far, however, I've not had a lot of luck. It broke at Tenby (I got a new one under warranty) and at Wimbleball whilst I recorded the figures on my watch, the Garmin on the handle bars decided not to work properly where I'd mounted it!

Nothing left in the tank. Member 5, 25569 posts Administrator | I think I might save up for a power meter , just because I like number crunching n stuff, plus I would also love a set of fresh legs for the marathon !

Eat.Cycle.Sleep.Win Member 2, 12511 posts SQ 190, BP 150, DL 280620.0 kgs @ 99kgs UnEq Administrator | There are some pretty cheap (relatively) options on the market Now. And I'd expect some price cuts in the next 6 months. I wouldn't rush Boar. You'll be doing most of your training on the kickr over winter anyway.
