There's a great sounding duathlon at Boxhill I'd like to have a go at - the Winter Ballbuster - 8 mile run up and down Boxhill, 24 mile bike up and down 3 times and then finish with another 8 mile run.

I can imagine the running would be tough, but the cycling really not.

It's a very gentle hill. It's only famous because of the switchbacks.

You're probably on the boardeline.

My FTP last time I measured was 267 at 74kg so not very different. I find I'm in between C and B.

They look at you're average w/kg over the race. For shorter ones I'd probably average a little high for C, but would be right near the back of B.

As you say however it doesn't usually matter. On most races everyone starts together. If you stick in a C after your name and you average way over the limit they suggest you move up or move you up (just because you have the highest average w/kg doesn't mean you win. The drafting has a huge effect).

Just this last week I've noticed a few races which are splitting into categories going off with 2minutes between. I haven't done one of those yet, but I think I'll go for C the first time I do.

I did a 3-4w/kg ZSUN chain gain last night which I'd recommend if they're on at a convenient time. You're not going crazy like a race, but it's a hard consistent pace (or it was until my ant+ dropped out for a couple of seconds after which there was no way I was catching them)

I'll go for C , I'm trying to get myself into the habit of training after tea , as the better rides/races are on in the evening , will try the one you did for sure.

its been a lovely day , so them jellyfish might be getting in some sun befor they head off to holiday for the winter, if that's what they do.

I did one of the Zwift race series , the first 'proper' race , I really enjoyed it and found myself with a largish group of C riders , so I guess I was in the right group , is there a place where they post results ?

if you spot a ride with a box hill finish steve, let me know

Great ride - that was a huge race. The number of riders really seems to be increasing at the moment. It was strange to open Strava to see what my run looked like and see your ride grouped next to the person who lives down the road from me who also did the race tonight!(he's made huge progress over the last year using Zwift - averaged 359watts for 46 minutes tonight!)

Most of the results are on Zwiftpower.com -

http://www.zwiftpower.com/v2/race.php?id=728

they're provisional at first and get altered a bit over the first few hours - you're down as cat B at the moment

thanks for the link !!

I hope to work my way towards 4 w/kg or any sort of FTP over 300

that race really was worth waiting until after tea for and I will be going for more evening races in the future, even though I was working hard , I was enjoying it and it was a threshold workout , job done.

your pal is a natural , it hink he got 2nd overall ? beast

I'm probably going to do the iron goat series race on Saturday night ,I fancy some climbing

I might have to do one of these races just so I don't feel like I'm missing out.

I'd definitely do the iron goat if there were more of them. Looks right up my alley.

It's quite interesting looking at power outputs at Bolton. It's "easily" possible to go under 6 hours averaging 200watts, so it's not so much a case of achieving a really high FTP so much as being to maintain a reasonable percentage of it. If you can maintain 75% of FTP then you'd only need an FTP of around 270 to average 200watts

Don't forget that position and weight is going to make a huge difference. I'm not going under 6 hours at 200w. Not even close. I'm like a granite air break on the bike compared to some.

I'd still argue that for most the best way to improve your average watts over 6 hours is to increase your ftp.

I saw yesterday that the wahoo elemnt and kickr now integrate wth bestbikesplit or whatever to called. Having the machine factor in wind etc to simulate a course is pretty cool. Although I reckon it'd lead a few people to push themselves too hard too often.

I don't disagree, but it is a balancing act between a good bike and still being able to run / train to run a good marathon. And trying almost to get the most out of the least training.

Certainly I'm finding as soon as I try to push intensity running or biking training in the other quickly becomes a problem.
