RIP, my beloved 20+ year-old Bernard Hinault, Columbus Neuron steel frame. Unhappy

The front end had been feeling a bit wobbly since yesterday, but I wasn't sure why and I hadn't inspected the frame closely. (My rear wheel is chronically loose and askew, my tyres can't seem to hold 100psi for more than a day... It's never been the smoothest of rides.)

This morning, half-way through my commute, something caught my eye:

I guess the last few years of potholes, jumped curbs, winter riding and general abuse from 100+kg on the saddle finally took their toll.

Now I need to find a replacement. Confused

Strange session last night.

Trainer/Trainerroad simply wouldn't work. Erg mode was all over the place and every time I switched to resistance mode Trainerroad locked up completely.

Out of complete frustration I opened the old version of Trainerroad. Worked perfectly! It's so difficult when things aren't working to know which bit is "broken"

You realise that the forces will be the same on the rotors no matter what set you have on right? I'd suggest that you were braking far too fast to be honest.

yes i understand that. but the brakes don't seem to stop me very effectively at all, to the point where it's quite scary. Especially compared to the basic shimano hyrdraulic discs on my mtb (obviously not expecting a cable pull hydraulic to be the same as a full hydraulic, but closer than i currently am).

i dont know if better pads and a tweak would be all it would need, or upgrading is the only real option?

This isn't a comment aimed specifically at you or your situation - but I am, in general, amazed at the amount of time and money people go to to build the trickest machine possible (and all of the effort invested in improving the engine, of course Happy ) only to throw a bog-standard set of Stoppers on it, almost as if it is an afterthought.

The same goes for Cars, even more worryingly - car won't start properly: "I'll get it sorted this afternoon" but the car won't stop properly? "I'll book it in to the Garage after Payday..."

I feel the same with cheap tyres people stick on cars/bikes. You can have the best car in the world's but if you stick some £40 tyres on it it's going to be nowhere near as good as it could be.

Lagos de Covadonga finish in the Vuelta today. One of my favourite climbs in pro cycling. The Vuelta is an odd race though and in pure hypothetical terms I would like to see what the racing would be like if it went back to its old place in the calendar.

I absolutely loved that today.

And I love la vuelta. Because everyone's had different seasons and no team brings a ludicrous train set to dominate It reminds me of GT racing of old. Lots of ding dong battles and crazy stages. It's like the Tour de France but everyone's a bit pissed!

Some interesting cycling at the Vuelta - I enjoy the extra element Froome adds - the two of them battling up front whilst he plods on at his own pace.

Bad day on the bike here - a few hill intervals - on the last one something happened to the back wheel - the chain jumped off the cassette into the spokes and jammed. I ended up carrying the bike home.

Bent back wheel and stuck chain - I'm not sure how to get it apart yet. Need new wheel/derailleur I think. Time for an upgrade maybe?

My earliest memories of actually watching the Vuelta were basically Yellow ONCE, at the peak of their powers, bossing the race from one end to the other - 'appy days.

ONCE were the bo***cks. A genuine super-squadra who had riders who could win from February to October. Their team circa 94-95 with Zülle, Jalabert, Mauri, Stephens,, Leanizbarrutia, Diaz Zabala, Etxebarria, etc was phenomenal.

Something very similar happened to me a few days ago. I ended up changing the whole rear mech and chain. Wheel was ok.

Sorry to hear about your woes gents. One thing to make sure is that you never lean your bike on its drivetrain side. This problem is often caused by a bent derailleur or hanger.
