It does seem a bit unfair to me when the peloton are going flat out to catch a small breakaway like that that the time gap goes from the front of the peleton

In today's day-and-age it would be simple to have individual times for each rider as they actually crossed the finish line...still makes sense to do it the way they do for safety reasons though, I think.

Racing weight?

"the trick is to keep losing weight until your friends and family ask you if you've been sick. then you know you're within 10 pounds. if they start whispering to each other, wondering if you've got cancer or aids, you're within 5. when they actually do an intervention, you're at race weight." - Slowman (Dan Empfield)

Only in part cycling but Gomez out of the Olympics is sad news. Would have been great to see him battling it out with the Brownlees.

in the 90's befor I went to Australia for a year , I got really fit and lost loads of weight (over 4 stone) one of the regular customers at Halfords where I worked asked me 'when were you diagnosed ?' ......... she though my leaving work meant I was probably going off to a hostel to die......

I was close to my racing weight !!!

not seen Gomez in any ITU events, I was thinking he was saving himself ..... he is usually so active .... Xterra/70.3/Olympic , he must be gutted !!

Mario mola seems in decent form, but I don't think he can outrun ali !!

First ride in a (small) group.

Usually on a very good day I can average just over 19mph on our 5 mile loop on a road bike

Today - 19mph was comfy and over 21mph on the final fast lap - interesting actually experiencing what a difference it makes following somebody for the first time

First time I raced we averaged just under 25mph for 35 miles. I trained at around 18/19mph pace and had no problems sitting in a bunch and holding the pace. This was a circuit race (which I hated as they are dull and just an excuse for people to rack up points after not doing a turn all day.) You are vastly fitter than I ever was Steve, so if you ever tried a road race, you'd have no issues at all in racking up averages pushing 27mph.

I have never ridden with 'others' in that fashion ..... is it possible for 'older' people such as myself to actually enter races ?

I'm frankly surprised this doesn't happen more often. People shouldn't be on the f**king tarmac, I don't care about the traditions of the sport. It's insane.

In the midst of it all, It has been a little forgotten that Froome cracked Quintana. Froome, in fact, has raced almost as if he wasn't racing for 'Satan's team' of desiccated calculating machines. I'm joking, of course. I have no problem with SKY. Shortening the stage but not being able to add sufficient barriers 3km out from the new finish meant that the result had to be amended. It was not a racing incident, it was a logistical one, so penalising Froome would have been ridiculous.

Totally crazy.

Whilst I can see what they're trying to do I really don't think those huge motorcycles in the middle of it just feet away from riders is helping.

Interesting comparison of the different speeds of TT bikes and road bikes on today's time trial and whether it's worth changing bikes.

Been away at a funeral so missed the last two days racing live. Caught up late last night and this morning.

Wow. Just wow.

Froome is, by a long way, the better cyclist between him and Quintana, and proof, if there was ever any needed that being a 48kg whippet isn't always the best way. His understanding of racing conditions and opportunities is so much better than 99% of fans and commentators give him credit for.

The real loser yesterday was Porte. He looked a million dollars on Ventoux. Seems an all round top chap too.
