Sunday 30/8/15

Britain's Natural Strongest Man u105kg

After a long journey finally arrived in Bridgend after over 8 hours of travel involving a car, a plane, a bus, a train and a taxi!!
Went to have a look at the gym and some of the kit on the Saturday evening and meet up with some of the other guys, K2 is seriously good set up.

Got to the gym on Sunday for weigh and was a bag of nerves and felt sick. Was slightly under 105kg (closer to 90 than I was 105 at 94kg).

1st Event Max deadlift starting at 260kg (going up in 20kg)
Still full of nerves, got the 260 easy enough and watching the video it was bloody quick.
Took forever to get myself physched up for the 280kg and thought I stood a good chance of getting it but to be honest I never had enough confidence for it.
Luckily the 20kg jump seemed to be too big a step for a few guys.
Joint 4th

2nd event 110kg Apollons axle for reps.
Traditionally overhead has been one of my worst but I've done a lot of work on it.
Popped up the first but as it went down it rolled off the mats and lost time resetting it.
Got another 4 reps easy enough and even got a 6th but finished the press after the time.
Pretty happy with that but need to work on cardio for overhead, the pressing was easy but the cleans were killing me. If you had told me a year ago that I would finish 4th place in an overhead event at 105kg I would have laughed at you.

3rd event 380kg Yoke 15m
This was the one I was dreading the most, yoke has not been a good event for me in the past and I have never moved one this heavy before.
Took quite a few drops but managed to complete the full 15m, it was far from fast but a massive PB for me. To put it in perspective, when I last did the nattys in 2012 I only manged to move a 300kg yoke 10m!!
5th place

4th Event 160kg Shield Carry
This was picked up from a plinth so a little easier. I saw a couple of guys go out before me and struggle with this and I soon found out why. The thing was horrible, it dug in the biceps and forearms and just crushed the breath out of your chest. Managed to get about 38m I think.Turned out only Scott Poulter (the eventual winner overall) managed to beat me.
2nd place and best result of the day

5th Event 78kg dumbell/ 100kg sandbag/ sled drag medley
Was looking forward to this, I'm normally pretty good at loading. Went off quite fast with the dumbell, and got the sandbag quite quickly. Set off with the sled and got halfway and then the combination of the heavy sled and the carry gave me a crazy pump in my quads and slowed me right down having to finish it by rowing the sled over the line.
5th place I think

6th Event Atlas Stones 125/135/145/155/160
Going into this there was 5.5 points seperating 2nd to 6th place so knew I had to put in a good performance. I had it worked out in my mind if I got the first 4 in a fast time I stood a chance of taking 2nd or 3rd place.
Got the 1st one easy, made a complete arse of the 2nd and misjudged the height and dropped the stone, 3rd went up ok after finding some grip, had an atempt at the next one but had no grip and ran out of time. Rather dissapointed with this performance. Think there were only 3 of the 105's to load 3 stones and I was slowest.

Finished in 5th place overall but only 3.5 points off 2nd. I fully believe on a different day with an extra rep here and a bit more speed there I could have taken 2nd place.
Well done to Scott Poulter for taking his 2nd title in a row and Ben and Thomas for 2nd and 3rd. (I will beat you next yearTongue )
A good enjoyable comp, met some great guys and had a fun night afterwards. Look forward to doing it all again next year.
Onwards to BSM u90 in 3 weeks, then Euro's and World's

Haven't logged in here lately so might as well update it.
Since last post have competed at BSM u90kg, finished in 9th slightly dissapointed as I didn't compete as good as I know I can. Highlight being pulling a 400kg 18" deadlift.
Also went to Europes strongest man u90kg. This was a bit better at a very heavy static dominant comp. Again finished 9th in a very strong field.
Body is not in bad shape considering I've had 3 comps since the end of August in 3 countries. Time to get the head down and train like mad for worlds now.

Went to WSM u90kg at the weekend, didn't really expect to qualify for the finals but gave it a good go.
Went over to Norway on Friday, got there around 12.30 but couldn't weigh in until 6pm and was really close to 90kg so didn't eat or drink anything.
Managed to get a lift with a 105 to weigh in, weighed in at 89.9kg in just my pants!

Saturday got to the venue around 10.30, had a chat with some of the guys.
1st event axle for reps 115kg in 60 secs (no belt cleans)
Warm ups felt really good, warmed up to 106 for a single and felt really easy!
Some decent numbers were being put up, between 3-6 reps. got the 1st far too easily and followed with another 2 easy reps then tried a 4th but messed up the clean and winded myself a bit. Waited too long and ran out of time for a 4th. Feel confident that I could have pressed 4 or 5 if I had cleaned it. Target was 3 for a PB so was happy at how easy it felt. 3 reps only got me 7 points, if I had got the 4th rep it would have been 11.5 points.

2nd event 125kg farmers 2x20m
Felt pretty confident with this, farmers are usually a good event for me.
However, made a mistake of not moving the implements first.
They were long peli cases with skids on the bottom and felt slightly unbalanced.
Threw me off balance, it didn't help I only had 2 weeks training before the comp and have had problems with IT bands and left knee. Dropped left side after about 10m, picked it up and got to the 20m mark. Reset and set off again, got a bit of a wobble on but finished in a reasonable 28 seconds. This was only good enough for 13th place.

3rd event 350kg tyre flip x6 flips
Wasn't sure how this would go, haven't really trained tyre and this was a tall tyre. I found it a bit awkward because of the size, it was too heavy to flip straight up but at the wrong height for me to get my knee under.
All 6 flips in 35 seconds, only got 4 points here.

Finished in 21st place, would have liked to break top 20 but in the size and quality of this field 1 rep and 1 second costs a lot of points. A really good enjoyable weekend all in and has just served to make me more hungry to train harder next year.
