Sunday 11th August 2013

Battle of Hastings and Sussex Comp

Event 1 Farmers Walk, 110kg each hand.
Pick up was quite low but otherwise the implements themselves were actually quite nice. Just the right sharpness on the handles. The thing that did surprise me was the gradient of the surface, I'd guess at about a 5% incline.

Every single competitor before me had dropped the bars so my aim was quite simply to hold onto them. The uphill stretch was hard, downhill was worse. About 5m before the end it felt like I was walking through golden syrup but I got to the end with no drops (apart from the drop turn). Grip held up fine and wasn't my limiting factor, general speed was. Finished 4th (I think).

Now the bad bit. As I put the farmers down I was aware of a tweak in my back, the same think I did on the yoke a couple of weeks back. I decided to go with my default plan in these situations and just ignore it

Event 2 Log Press 100kg, FTOH.
I had trouble even cleaning it, I just couldn't generate any power in my back. Pressing was worse again. It was the same problem I couldn't generate any power in my back. Each rep took multiple attempts and only just made it. I totalled 3 reps in the end, that's far below what I can do in 75s.

At this point I needed to make an assessment, carry on through an injury and keep getting a sub par performance while inviting further injury or retire. I sat and debated with myself for a good 10 minutes before reaching a decision. After just 2 events I called it a day. Maybe if there was just 1 event left I'd have gutted it out but with 3 left I quite simply wasn't worth it. I know I've made the right choice for the longevity of my lifting career but I'm stilled pissed off about it.

I'm going to rest up next week, brood on my anger and rebuild my passion. Looks like its project rehab for a while. Then project bullet proof.

Imagine what the word of the week would have been if you tried to push through and ended up making it worse.

Thanks guys, you win some you lose some. I've had lots of food and lots of sleep, oh and lots o ibuprofen. It's easing up a little today. I'm looking ahead to the next comp now, not going to wallow in what could have been.

I was talking to some of the guys yesterday seeing the success of the Hastings comp they are looking at setting something up in Eastbourne for October and having 3inters classes split by bw.

That sounds very promising. There were some massive units there, how did that huge guy get on? I think we're a similar weight but I'd say most guys had a good 10-15kg on us.

The massive guy came 5th. I weighed in at 109kgs on Friday. I'll keep you posted re Eastbourne, as the Hastings comp didn't seem to make it onto here.
