The programme is repeated on C4 tonight at 10.55 for anyone who wants to actually watch it before offering an opinion on it. Wink

He's a jolly clever fellow that Mr Brown.
The experiment towards the beginning of the program where people threw what they 'thought' to be acid into the faces of the volunteers was explained by the fact that deep down they would know that they wouldn't really be asked to maim someone for the purposes of light entertainment. This fact hadn't changed by the end of the program. i.e. The subject knew he would not really kill Stephen Fry.

As for the conspiracy theories, I can't really see the value of spending so much time and effort into hypnotising someone into killing against their will, when there are clearly so many people willing to kill for so many other reasons. With the case in the program, why would they let this man live, knowing full well that he could recover his memories at any time?

Some nice clever techniques employed to aid the belief that is would be possible though. Mentioning the "hypnotism act of 1952" gives legitimacy to the phenomenon, as does the allusion to the CIA. The ice bath tests with the 2 most suggestible subjects also helped to show the 'power' of hypnosis. It always helps to have some scientists along too. Especially when they go into some details about their credentials.
Yes, a jolly clever fellow. I like him.

obviously we would never know if thet fella would have offed stephen fry if the bullets werent blanks , but i believe he was hypnotised and all that guff to do what he did (pop some blanks at a fat dude) and derren is a great chap , that lottery one was possibly a low point , but still.

I would imagine both would be possible, although I have no evidence to back this statement up. Happy

The lottery thing was pretty gash, but yes I agree with the above points. Basically he convinced someone to shoot blanks. *giggle*
I found it interesting that the subject was brought into the theatre quite early in the afternoon, so he could acclimatise and feel at ease, in much the same way as in the restaurant. Both times he was also surrounded by people prompted not to react.
All jolly interesting.
