From my journal

BULLDOG BASH U90K 2012

After a 4 hour drive down to Stratford we arrived at the Bash all in one piece. We even had time to stop in Stratford. Rather than visit the Bard's house we visited Ronald McDonalds gaff for some food. What light through yonder Golden Arches breaks...

Once we had got past the half pissed ( well it was nearly 1pm) Hells Angel on the gate we made our way to the comp pitch and weighed in on Bob's optical scales of doom. Happy that his visual scan had shown me to be under 90k I started my usual vigorous warm up of chatting s**t and occasional yawning.

I was feeling pretty good to be fair without my usual last minute weight loss and having had a sober night the evening before. That was until Tyrone rocked up.f**k me this bloke is a unit. I recognised him from Chris Jenkins video if the Welsh U90k but he was even more hench in the flesh. When he was stood next to me he commented on how tall I was for a 'under90k' , all I could think was how f**king wide he was for the same-ish weight!

90K LOG FROM THE CHEST

In training my conditioning had really let me down on this. Best I'd done was 6 reps so when Phil Hocking knocked out 8 reps I was starting to think I might be in trouble. Tyrone went next and strict pressed 14 , Karl then managed 10 so I was thinking fourth was my best hope.Sparky like me isn;t a lover of log and managed 3-4 iirc. Shaun has been playing with split jerking in training and when got it right it had been working for him. He went with the jerk and managed 6 which left me very worried.

Much to my surprise the log felt light and I managed 6 quick reps without much leg drive inside 20 seconds. I took a few breaths and went again at 30 seconds. I hoped to manage another 6 reps but my conditioning let me down as expected and I finished on 10, breathing out of my arse.

10 reps - Joint 2nd

90K FARMERS FOR DISTANCE

I like moderately heavy farmers for time , I'm not so keen on distance or super heavy as I can move better than I can grip. So this said I had no idea how this event would pan out.

My memory of this is a bit sketchy but I remember Phil being in the lead with about 65m and Tyrone struggling a bit with around 50m. Shaun and me had been neck and neck in training so I was relieved when he appeared to find it so easy he started showboating by going extra slow but still making nearly 80m.

When I picked the farmers up and got 40m under my belt I was confident I would win the event. I still felt the same after the turn at 60m but at about 70m my grip just went and I only managed 2nd.

70m -ish - 2nd

125K ATLAS STONE OVER YOKE

Phil gave me a scare when he rattled out 7 or 8 reps and Shaun I think also managed 8 so I knew I was going to have to work hard to win 'my' event.

Thankfully my heart and lungs played ball and I nailed 9reps inside the time and even let Bob goad me into doing a 10th for the crowd...and maybe my ego a little

LAST MAN STANDING DEADLIFT

I was f**ked after the stones and was struggling to get my tacky off in time to warm up for this. As it was in between gasping the the warm up lifts felt ok.

I knew Shaun could beat me here and I didn't know what Tyrone was capable of although I feared the worst.I just wanted to pull something decent.

As expected it came down to me Shaun and Tyrone. I was surprised to hear 260k was a PB for Tyrone and I fancied him to pull the 270k that was called for next. The sly old dog in me came into play here and I went over to him and suggested he take his time and not rush up for his next lift. As much as I would have cheered him on and been pleased for him I was desperately trying to buy myself time recover.

As it was Tyrone didn't manage a second PB and Shaun surprisingly failed 270k too. My 260k pull had been ok but I was far from confident of nailing the 270k so I was more than a little pleased when it went up without drama.

270k - first palce

BACK TO BACK TUG-O-WAR

I was looking forward to this event before hand simply because I'd never done it and it sounded fun!

It helped to know that at this point I was also pretty much nailed on for a first or second to Shaun so I could be happy with either result.

My fist pull was against Tyrone and it was like having a massive pitbull on the end of a lead! I think Tyrone tried too hard to rush the win whereas I concentrated on holding my ground before taking my chance when I felt some slack in the harness.Thankfully my tactics worked and I advanced to the final pull against Shaun.

Shaun had an epic battle against Phil in his semi final and I fancied my chances on this basis. I forgot I'm a knackered old f**k and he's a young fit hungry unit! Despite winning our fist pull I couldn't compete with his will to win and he beat me handily over the three pulls.

2nd place

Overall - 1st!

Great little comp and top lads to go up against. Apologise for the lengthy write up I've been trying to nail cans while watching the Olympics wind up so may have been distracted

Happy as hell to win my first comp and had a great weekend with Jnr and family Plews. The night of the comp is worthy of another write up but it's not for Sugden . Suffice to say there was strippers , Jack Daniels and some misuse of dodgems ....I blame Jnr for leading me astray...
