I was talking myself in and out of this session for most of the day and eventually did it at about 7pm, short on time so just did a 500m warm up. Anyway, I decided on going for a flat time, just keep everything in the 1:37's. They were getting pretty tough from mid way through, far more manageable that yesterdays session though. I'm guessing next week I may stand a chance of keeping these in the 1:36's? As for the HR, these were meant to be AN - 168 - 175 which is just never going to happen for me on anything less than a flat out 5k

I think I could normally have managed it, but training / life is getting on top of me a little at the moment and I'm not recovering properly. Mid way through the fourth set my legs were pretty much gone, I tried keeping the pace up but it drifted and had a pretty bad last 200m or so. I was meant to be doing x5 but couldn't face the last set so just did it as a cool down. Next week - same set but x5 and not be such a soft t**t

Cheers Boar, how many qualify for the worlds? It would be great to have a crack at qualifying, like you say though there are a few very fast guys in my group, all the reason to train harder! Anyway, it soon became apparent that around 1:32 seemed like a good pace to hold. I had a little left on the last set so I think keeping in the 1:31's is a good target for next week. 45 seconds rest seems like plenty at the start, but it soon seems like hardly any. Towards the end I was having to unstrap, shake out for a few seconds, strap back in again and go, HR was 146 when I set off on the last set. Anyway, very enjoyable set overall, I can see the attraction jt. 500m r13 Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M HR 1:56.2 500m 1:56.2 223 1067 13 138 0:21.8 100m 1:49.0 270 1230 17 124 0:22.8 200m 1:54.0 236 1113 13 136 0:24.5 300m 2:02.5 190 955 10 140 0:23.8 400m 1:59.0 208 1014 13 144 0:23.3 500m 1:56.5 221 1061 13 148 500m r13 Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M HR 1:55.2 500m 1:55.2 229 1087 13 143 0:23.6 100m 1:58.0 213 1033 13 129 0:23.6 200m 1:58.0 213 1033 13 139 0:22.8 300m 1:54.0 236 1113 11 147 0:22.6 400m 1:53.0 243 1134 13 150 0:22.6 500m 1:53.0 243 1134 13 150 Just jumped strait into these. Max drag - 211, which I'm not sure if it's the best way to do it or not yet. Struggled to sort the stroke rate out, looking at the numbers above it seems obvious I wasn't going to hit r12, but the screen was flicking between 11, 12 and 13 on the second set. Not too fatiguing so I'll try it again every so often and hit that r12 next time

I'm in a similar situation to yourself - I'm starting on the faster/shorter stuff and it seems hard to use HR as a gauge for these sessions. I'll be looking at the pace guide and going off that. Hopefully it won't kill me.

Member 9, 18279 posts SQ 255, BP 167.5, DL 330752.5 kgs @ 103kgs Eq | Doesn't the pace guide say 'faster than or equal to' (I can't find this symbol on my keypad) for AN work, so as you say, you could aim for the pace guide as a minimum and see how much faster you can get it on the shorter rows?
