What's people's opinion on the safety squat bar?

Does it help to improve your squats, or just make you stronger at "safety squat bar squats"?

Ive never even seen one let alone used one but a lot of people seem to wax lyrical about the safety squat bar.

I saw one once at a gym on holiday and thought I'd give it a try just to see what it was like. Obviously it felt odd with all that padding high up on the traps.
There's probably a reason why I've only ever seen that one bar. IMO if you want safe squats get some competent spotters or if alone use a power rack or smith machine

Bryn, the guys at WSB and those that subsequently use the bar and endorse it dont use it for it's 'safety' aspect, least not from what I've seen. Apparently the shift in the load can really force you to work hard to keep yourself as upright as normal.

It can also allow those with s**tty shoulders to push the squats when they might not normally be able to.

Still, again this comes with the caveat that I've never actually used the bloody thing.

Very versatile piece of equipment. Degree of carry-over to 'normal' squats will depend on many factors, but I can see that it might work. With lighter weights, great for quad-focussed squatting (where the effect of the bar pitching you forward is easier to counteract); squats holding the rack can also be very interesting if some thigh work is required whilst limiting load on lower back (not massively dissimilar in feeling to hack squats). Great for GMs, if you do them. Best piece of kit for standing calf raises that I've ever used. Likewise good for lunges, step-ups, Bulg. split squats, etc. (esp. because the bar just stays on your shoulders without having to hold it).

We have recently all pitche din for a cheap one from gym-ratz.co.uk at Power Press in Dudley. I have used it for my max effort 2-3 times now...The bar as all the articles say is in a constant process of trying to crush u, form ur mid-section (top of the abs to ur traps its trying to round you into urself. Gives ur traps, abs and upper back a tuning!!!

Thanks for the suggestions - we've had one in the corner of the garage for about 5 years - so far it's main use has been somewhere to hang knee wraps and wrist wraps. Perhaps the secret is more assistance type exercises with the bar rather than just plain safety bar squats

That's my impression too. I don't have particularly bad shoulders, but I can imagine that holding onto the handles on the yoke pads is relatively forgiving for the afflicted. I think that the camber probably plays a significant part in the effect of the bar as well, but I've only used one model (Watson). There's a huge variety of exercises listed here:
http://www.elitefts.com/documents/safety_squat_bar.htm

Not all are of equal merit, but some ideas. I suspect that a yoke walk with the SSB would, however, be an exercise in insanity. Nothing usefully hardcore about a face-plant with 300+ kg...
