I know this varies massively, maybe too much to warrant an answer, but I'll ask anyway. Is there an hourly min/ max/ optimal amount of glucose that can taken in per hour on a lengthy cycle to avoid flagging as much as possible?

Glucose or sugar?

For glucose, off the top of my head, I think it's about 60g an hour.

I'm not sure if it's pseudo science or not, but I'm led to believe that your stomach absorbs fructose slightly differently, and so consuming a combination of glucose and fructose can help you absorb more.

makes sense. ride is estimated at c2000 cals, 50g glucose 200 cals. A lb of glucose seems a lot though. Guess not spread over a good few hours.

I know less than nothing about cycling but it was very interesting catching up on this journal. Good luck for Italy - those mountains look incredible!

Apparently there is some science behind it.

Interesting to read the comments about the amount of carbs Chrissie Wellington was able to take on and he fact she apparently trained her self to take on even more carbs

Haribo and apples seem like a good combination then. Happy

Do they still recommend fizzy drinks to aid CHO absorption? That was certainly the case when I was at Uni. But I realise times change...

I may need to know a bit of this stuff for when I do Tough Mudder in 2 months with absolutely no cardio or running training whatsoever. I think I might die.

It is! When you're taking on 6000 cals, the most important thing is that they taste nice Wink

Dont knoe about 'recommending' fizzy drinks, but plenty of pro tour riders will neck a can of pop within minutes of finishing a stage/race. At the end of the day, glucose is glucose.

Tuesday 1st July - Day 11th

Training
AM - 13.5 miles commute, working quite hard on cadence
PM - 65 miles, 1200m of climbing, steady

Diet
1PM - chicken stir fry, large salad, strawberries and cream
6PM - 500ml of iced coffee
10:30PM - bounty, coco pops, sweet and sour chicken and rice

Notes
Legs are really starting to suffer now. The morning commute is a bit of a drag so working hard to make sure that I am trying to improve my cadence at least.

Evening ride was really good, not a cloud in the sky, fairly quiet roads and just what I needed after a s**t day at work. Had forgotten how late I had got out of work so ended up having to rush home as I didnt have any lights, so gave it a blast for the laat 15 or so miles but didnt have much pace in the legs. Climbs were all solid, but not quick, just tryng to get plenty of climbing in really. Also realsied that I am far more interested in my training than in sticking to the diet, as I was meant to have eaten by 9PM. Although I did feel pretty s**t when I got home, pretty empty.

Decided to bin off any real training today and try and get a similarly hilly ride in tomorrow, if i can get out earlier then try and go 70+ miles.

That ride was from Dartford, out into North West Kent where I did a few loops of some quiet country roads, and then back into East London finishing at Bow.

All in that took about 4 hours. Left work at just gone six and got in just after 10.

I'm lucky in that I dont have a life.

I cant do it for a large part of the year as work is too crazy. But I LOVE riding my bike and I love getting better at it. I'm more a journey than a destination kind of guy so I get a lot out of the training.

The other way i think is what do I miss out on? Watching s**tty TV mostly, I dont have a Mrs or kids and it stops me from going out and spending money that I dont have.

So, yeah i guess I do like it that way.

Fair one. I can imagine it being a pleasant experience on a warm summer evening actually. 4 hours is still a loooong time though! Grin

I'm so gutted for David Millar. Can't imagine first realising you've been dropped for your last TdF, in your home country too, when your teammates stop answering their phones to you. f**k.
