Put my name down to a berlin highland games team comp on saturday 14th, so less than two weeks.

I am feeling weak as piss at the moment, but just going there to have a laugh!

Not sure about the events, because my german is not good enough, but they have things like tossing various heavy things (not heavy as in strongman heavy, but heavy in terms of throwing!), farmers walk (wonder what that would be like?), barrel roll, caber toss (now that will go to a random direction...), stone carry and so on.

i have a kilt!

Any tips? i know NOTHING!

Was about to post a load of hints and tips until i read the last post ha haGrin

I'm sure the games you'll be attending will be a light hearted affair, therefore you'll have plenty of throwers offering hints and tips but i'll give you a run down of the basic 5 events.

Shot putt: you've seen it done i'm sure but if you cannot do a full glide or rotation, try the side step to the trig to get some movement before the putt.

Weight for distance: 28lb or 56lb, thrown using one hand, using a style similar to discus, you have a 9ft area, most throwers turn 3 times before releasing the weight but if you havent done it i suggest you try 2 rotations.

Weight over the bar: 56lb block weight throw up in the air and over a bar, using one hand. I would advise placing your free hand on your leg to get more purchase when pulling the weight up. A similar gym movement would be a close grip power clean. A strong legs and back are the key to success here.

Scots hammer: Differs from the olympic hammer due to the wooden shaft(no jokes here gents), you face away from the way you direction you release the hammer, you turn the hammer 3 to 4 times, increasing the speed of the turns each time. If you have any tacky i suggest you take it, the speed you turn this hammer will just want to leave your grip.

Caber: The caber is "active" when it has been raised in front of you, first thing is to stabilise it against your shoulder, legs wider than shoulder with apart making a large triangle, now you have to work your way down as low as you can whilst having your hands clasped tightly together(again with tacky). When you get to the lowest point stabilise again, let the caber fall back slightly and lift quickly and get your hands underneath even quicker. Now you have to steady a 18 ft caber and the thick end is at the top, the secret is to keep the top directly above you so if the caber moves to one side, you adjust to maintain that position. When your ready, move forward and nudge the caber with your shoulder and run as fast as you can. When youre ready stop and pull the end your holding back over your head, not out in front of you. a strong back will hold you in good stead here

I'm sure you'll have plenty of opportunity to practice on the field and you'll get plenty of advice too from other throwers. Other than that i suggest you get on youtube and check out some of the clips on there, if nothing else you'll have a great laugh trying all the HG events, good luck, cant wait to hear the results.

Well this sounds fun! Good luck Joni!

So who's going to organise a first timers highland games for a laugh, with a few pros helping out to show us how it's done?!

I'll be up for getting a kilt and having a bash!

Been and watched in Peebles. Some real proper athletes there, many throwers with international honours in shotput or discus mixing it with, to be honest, no-hopers.

I've never seen camaraderie likie it between competitors. they all sat together, prepared together, shared kit, tips etc. so I'm sure you'll be fine once there!

Highland games is weird, there are events all over Scotland all the time, but you never hear about them IN SCOTLAND, but yet look on Ironmind and they seem to be a massive deal

It is one of the things I would like to try next year, but I don't really know where you would go about training for it

Start looking here http://www.albagames.co.uk/ or contact Dougie Edmonds or Hamish Davidson? I think your the ideal shape for highland games and throwing because of your long levers and height.

Cheers dude!

I was going to try and talk to Edmunds about it when I go and watch Drew and Keys in the next team comp

I'm sure he will know the closest place I could actually train it
