Right a quick question, on sat I was dedlifting and I broke the bar, I only had 280kg on the bar and only of the top hats split in two, I don't drop the bar I never have and never will, should the bar just snap like this? I know it was a cheap cast bar not a machines bat and it wasn't stamped with a max safe weight, even if I exceeded the max weight should it just snap like that it is it years of abuse that's done it? Next question were can I get a 6 foot bar cheepy cheep to replace it as iv offered to replace it
Thanks
Mat

If you were training in a gym and it broke through normal use, why should you replace it? Just a thought, but what if you'd been squatting or benching when it broke and seriously injured yourself?

How much was the bar rated to? Some of those fixed bars out there are only rated to 80 or 100kg and I think that a bar is supposed to maximally handle about double what the stated weight is or something like that.
Years of use will also cause the overall strength to degrade.
If it's a gym bar though, I'd have to go by what Martin said. He's right.

Well I said I would replace it a I broke it but if it's a dodgy bar then I shouldnt have to, there wasn't any rating on the bar and I know it's a cast ended bar not a machined one like iv got at home,

Out of interest, are you referring to cheap Olympic bars?

I ask because a sign has recently gone up my local gym claiming that bars 'should not be loaded to over 200kg.' This has been flatly ignored, but I wonder if they have been buying really cheap s**t bars?

Bars do snap occasionally. We had an Eleiko bar that snapped with 60kg on it and they are supposed to have a lifetime guarantee! If all you were doing was deadlifting 280kg, then it's not your fault the bar broke.

Iv got a bar at home from the strength shop and it is rated at 750lb so If it's not stamped it isn't rated, how can your gym tell you not to exceed 200kg if I get told I can get any stronger I will be ofski, you can pay big money for a good bar that's why gyms buy cheep ones, and I think that the rated ones are made from forged metal not cast pig iron

I think the gym's choice of weight was based on ignorance and malice more than any logic.

The person who I think suspect is responsible is clearly a retard. I saw her 'coaching' some weasel the other day. He was doing overhead presses with 40kg, stood with his heels raised on the edge of the deadlift area. He was also a retard. I got the impression that she wanted to rim him.

On the other hand, she finds a 410kg 18 inch deadlift (not from me I might add) offensive. Phenomenal.

As I said, the limit is flouted at every opportunity.

Yeah a cast iron bar probably would snap with 280 on it, however if its not stamped with a weight limit i dont think its your fault. s**t happens, lad at our gym was doing push press with very heavy weight and lost the bar at the top and it landed in the rack which bent it very badley lol.. he wasent asked to replace it. mistakes and accidents happen.

Crossfit bars have appeared in the naval base gym and they are pretty s**t, dont know the rating but they just feel very flimsy.... maybe they are meant to have a lot of whip in them?

I don't mind replacing the bar as it broke on me but I don't want to replace it with a better bar lol, I'm not spending alot on a bar if it's a cheep one, but to be honest in my gym there is only me and my brother who train heavy, it's a " fitness gym" not a BB gym as iv been told so many times lol, there is a lad doing a strength camp in Newark after the uk welsh quelled so I'm going down there a few times a week,

Most failures in components (including bars) occur due to fatigue rather than a large load. It was probably an old bar that had been dropped a lot or something. And there are also freak occurances.
