I am a bench-only guy Member 3, 10068 posts SQ 185, BP 175, DL 235595.0 kgs @ 140kgs UnEq Administrator | There's certainly life out there imo; life arose so ludicrously early in Earth's history as to make it seem unlikely that it's in any sense a difficult thing to happen. But we're talking about bacteria and the like there (after all, to a first approximation, all life on earth is single-celled; we large creatures are disproportionately noticable, but we're a small minority by weight and tiny by number). Intelligent life? Probably depends on your definitions. I would not be in the least surprised if complex-tool-using life were very rare. We have a fair number of moderately intelligent species on earth, and only one of them seems to be a habitual tool-builder and innovator; it's not at all clear that it's a good evolutionary strategy, we've not been here for long and may well not be around for long. That would explain why SETI keeps coming up blank; there may be lots of life out there, and even many planets with poets, but none with radio engineers. Whales and squid aren't going to build much. Equally, I wouldn't be surprised if it weren't. We just don't have the data. As to visiting Earth? The physics we know makes it seem very improbable, as does the SETI data and the nature of the alleged visitations. Fewer people these days see angels and more aliens, but I don't think they're either of them any more or less frequent.

They can only be seen from above, so why else would they make them. And have you never seen 'Event Horizon'. You don't have to travel at the speed of light, just create a black hole by folding space on itself and going through. Like folding a piece of paper and punching a hole through to get to the other side, rather than going around. Gotcha now about the drawings for other life forms to see. There's something about a civilisation worshipping a star that we can't see with the naked eye because it's hidden by the brightness of another star, but they claimed it was there for thousands of years. They recently discovered it reall was there. It could have been from the change of our elliptical path over thousands of years, but i'm not sure if 2-3 thousand years is long enough. If we were to enter a black hole, wouldn't we just contribute to the mass and density of a neutron star as opposed to travelling through it? Everybody - thoughts on the LHC at CERN??? No googling it if you don't have a clue what i'm on about.

Still got a little bit of strength Member 400, 22989 posts | Funky_monkey said: 2 - No. Nearest star is Proxima Centurai, I think 4.2 light years away or about 25 trillion miles away. At 40,000km/h it would take over 113,000 years just to get there. Even if you were just supposing that there is a planet with intelligent life in each solar system, it doesn't seem feasible. If they saw us now with flight, man-made sattelites and other means of "intelligence" then by the time they got here we would have destroyed ourselves anyway. I can't remember who said it, I think it was Hawking - "the only reason we will never make contact with intelligent life is because by the time one is capable of doing so, they will destroy themselves first." The closest earth like planet is "only" 20 light years away, so you're looking at 116 trillion miles or 4,640,000,000 years or 4.64 billion years. This is assuming you're doing 40,000km/h or 25,000mph. 4.6 billion years is roughly the age of our planet, so they'd arrive now if they left as soon as our planet was formed - with no simple life, only basic gasses. The only way I see anything coming remotely close is travelling close to the speed of light. What if you think beyond 3 dimensions.....?

gassamer more like Member 2182, 489 posts SQ 220, BP 150, DL 250620.0 kgs @ 115kgs UnEq | 1.Yes - It's all about probabilities. To assume otherwise would mean you are retarded or religious. 2.Yes - I believe we are the product of intervention from outside the planet, or even originated completely from outside the planet. I am a believer in the Ancient Astronaut theory.

The fourth dimension is time, which I already discussed :P Given that the fastest thing anything can travel (including the universe moments after the big bang) is the speed of light, I'm going to assume that nothing can travel faster than that. I still don't believe that time travel will be invented, otherwise we would have found out about it from the future. Even 10% of the speed of sound is ridiculously fast if this whole nuclear propulsion malarkey ever happens.

My opinions have run their course Member 694, 3112 posts | do you mean 10% of the speed of light, the sound barrier obviously having already been broken time travel may one day be possible but maybe there will be a limit on how far it can go, for example you could only go back a week or something, in which case we wouldnt know about it.
