When I first moved to Manchester, I saw a fight between two lads and a lad with his staffie.

I think its was the chavvy dick with the dog that started it by threatening them with the dog initially, the two lads removed their belts and used them as metal buckle ended whips. They were very effective at getting the dog to keep its distance!

I learnt two things that day, a good way to defend yourself from a chavs dog and that It might be best to find a better area of the city to live in.

I think the important message this thread is imparting to the OP is: You dont need to to prancing around in a pair of John Lobbs wearing a Bernard Weatherill three piece to be taken seriously but likewise there's no harm in making an effort.

I don't make these silly rules up but they are however accepted as norms from my experience of working in the city.

* No brown in town, ever.
* Pin stripes, just no.
* White or light pastel colour shirt with double cuff.
* Use a bit of sense on your tie
* If you want to bust out a pocket square, it matches the shirt and not the tie, that's a common faux pas

I think its for people that need to escape reality as they are not best pleased with their lives.

RE: casual steroid use, maybe its the same story from a different angle, they cant accept the reality of their physical state & due to pressure from TV / Magazines take extreme measures to alter it?

Crazy scenario:

What if the computer operating system you use collected metrics on your activities and shared them with shadowy government agencies with black budgets and no accountability to the law. Even worse what if all of the web services you used did the same. Then what if the telcos that carried your communications mirrored off copies of all your text, data & voice conversations which was stored forever in a giant database administered by said shadowy agency.

I wore it again tonight; pulled it a bit tighter and moved it a bit higher up, I'm starting to get it now, blowing your belly into it does stabilize the core better.

I think it has its use in heavy singles to keep the chance of tweaking the lower back to a minimum.
