Hello

Cliff here. I've recently switched - as of three weeks ago - from general weight-training to powerlifting. I've never entered any sort of contest, though I hope to if I can get my numbers to something halfway decent.

I've spent the afternoon browsing the site. In addition to the wealth of experience on here, I'm also impressed with some of the most sustained pisstaking I've seen on any forum.

At the moment, my goals are:

To improve my grip, which is criminally weak from years of using straps. My best pull is 240 with straps, but only around 170 with.

To gradually up my squat. I'm squatting 182.5 X 5 at well below parallel (belt only), but I doubt that my 1RM is over 200kg.

To practice my paused bench . I'm not very familiar with how much of a pause is used in powerlifting, but I've just discovered that a two second pause devastates my low rep poundages (130 X 8 regular reps turns into 125 X 2 paused).

Journal starts next session. Cheers.

Welcome mate.Your lifts are very good and i can see in a few months once you have mastered 1rep max's, pausing etc.. you will have a veery good total. At 182.5 x 5 that is an EASY 200kg squat and do you use one hand over and one hand under on the deadlift?? helps allot.

Lookin forward to your journal.

welcome to the site mate a paused bench is only the time it takes to clap your hands far quicker than 2seconds, 130 for 8 is Vgood, along with your other lifts makes you a strong m2 (BDFPA) lifter or m1(BWLA)Lifter good luck.

Welcome to the site.
Bin those straps for everything and your grip will improve without a problem.
Come along to the next contest for a flavour of competitive lifting?

Thanks for the responses and welcome, gents.

If I do compete, it would probably be unequipped and in a drug-tested fed. I will try to get to a local contest to see what's involved. I'm down in Wiltshire (oo-arr, etc).

Unfortunately, my 170kg pull is already using an alternate grip. However, I've only just discovered the wonder of chalk, so I'll try a 1RM in a while to see what effect that has. And yes,the straps are history.

Main issue with bench press is persistent shoulder pain. I've only recently started bench pressing again, when I found out that avoiding flaring my elbows out really helped. With my elbows tucked, pressing is uncomfortable, but not unbearable.

Hello! Sounds like you've got some strong lifts just waiting to get out. Chalk will definitely help with the grip issues.

Welcome!

Even if you don't get round to lifting on the 17th of feb, come down and watch if you can. There is going to be at least 4 of us lifting there (Phil Nosko, Carl, Silver Oldie and myself), plus more watching.

Your deadlift will get up to speed quick enough!
