ok so we all know that both are an excellent demonstration of strength,

but which one is cooler?

to put it another way, which one yields the most respect from the general population?
strongman, powerlifting or weightlifting? (id be supprised if it was weightlifting because most people done even know what it is)

I cant believe you even need to ask that question

99% of the general public wont know what PL is

However, given its TV coverage (especially on the BBC late 80s/early 90s) strongman had a relatively big audience

So the general public will definitely perceive strongman to be cooler (and it is..)

Oh dear... not THIS thread AGAIN.

They're all great, do what you enjoy.

'Respect' from the general public... I'm fairly sure that people that aren't into lifting themselves couldn't give a s**t if you deadlift 100kg or 1000kg... Lifting weights doesn't garner respect, nor should it.

I was actually going to start a "Why are strongmen stronger dead lifters than powerlifters?" thread, but decided not to! Grin

see and its lucky im here to conduct this cutting edge experiment. stromgmen are better deadlifters ITHER because theyre cooler, OR because theyre less cool.

Straps and hitching?

I bet Benni or Bolton would but up some pretty big numbers with hitch and straps allowed

Obviously respect from the public is not what training should generally be about, but i do think there is a degree of respect for lifting heavy weights, but it comes from fellow sportsmen, not so much from the sedentary masses.

I think Strongman probably captures public minds most becasue it is done with onjects they can concieve, where plates mean very little to anyone who doesn't train. For example, if I am out pulling a truck along the pier, sometimes passers by will stop and take pictures or ask questions, and generally seem impressed with with what they are seeing. I dont feel you would get the same response to a bar with plates
