Did my first comp last Saturday. Out in 47 Unhappy back in 39 Happy Very rusty, long game ok, short game s**te, no chance to practice this week, another comp tomorrow. Just enjoying playing tbh, anything else is a bonus. Might be different in three months time though... Wink

Great stuff from you too this year. The British should be good Happy

Tonight's Bench. The (somewhat ambitious and optimistic) target tonight was 5 singles with 165.

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
120 for 2
145 for 1 - nice and fast
165 for 1 - hard
165 for 1 - hard, but not as hard as the one before
165 - fail, lost it at the sticking point, another inch and it would have gone
150 for 1 - to commands
150 for 1 - to commands
130 for 6
110 for 12.

Odd one today. I had an evening meeting at 7, so I nipped home for 5, got the session done, and then went back in. I decided not to persevere with the 165s after I failed my third one. Experience tells me that I don't get stronger as the session progresses, and failures fatigue far more than successful lifts. So I thought that a couple of rehearsals of my opener would be of more benefit.

That's all the heavy stuff done now. A couple of 'heavy speed' sessions on Thursday and next Monday and that's me done.

For all intents and purposes, I'm lifting as heavy as I've ever done, and that's not a bad place to be when you're nearer your 60th birthday than your 50th.

What's the SSS ? If it's even above 65 then a back 9 of 39 is fantastic. The short game will return, it's the first thing to go when your out of practice.

I take it you've joined your local club......Good on ya mate Happy

Par 68 (35/33). Notional SSS is 65, but the wind often takes it up a stroke or two. This Saturday, I kept getting near the green in 2 and walking off with a 6. As you say, it'll come back, the short game has always been my strength. In the meantime, I'm accumulating 0.1s Happy

I bet you grew up on the punch shot and the bump and run on Stornoway. The high soft fade would be "interesting" in the wind up there.Grin

Surprisingly no. It's a very soft parkland course and the ball tends to stop where it lands. The bump and run will either aquaplane or plug! You tend to learn to use the wind...

Bench. A 'don't tire yourself out but keep strength levels up' session tonight.

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
115 for 3
130 for 3 x 10 sets

All sets good apart from set 1 and set 8, which were a bit creaky. Too heavy to be speed, too light to be too taxing, a nice maintenance combination. Certainly feel like I've worked right now. On Monday, I go up to my opener, do some volume on the way down, and then rest for 6 days.

I would have been very pleased with your golf score. I played for the first time in about 5 years last month and shot 122 , I was just plain f**king awful. Shot 102 the week after which is still terrible but a bit less embaressing.

I think my best ever medal round at Stornoway was 73, but I won a matchplay final 3& 2 and I was level par for the 16 holes it took. The short term target is to start breaking 80, but tbh I'm just enjoying playing right now and the score is secondary. When golf was my main sport, it used to frustrate the hell out of me. No more...

Most golfers would be pleased with my bench. Most benchers would be pleased with my golf score. I reckon that Giles bloke might beat me at both atm, but I'd be quite highly placed in a golf/bench biathalon Happy

For those following my golfing progress, I shot 88 today. Didn't get a break or a good bounce all the way round, 88 was the worst it could have been, probably not as far off breaking 80 as the number suggests. Hopefully it took a kilo off as well. No golf next Saturday, travelling down for the Raw Bench.

88 after so many years off is good scoring. Our course is like a soaked sponge with standing water on the greens so no golf this weekend. Is the short game coming back ?
