An amazing human being Member 2047, 17156 posts SQ 262.5, BP 170, DL 300732.5 kgs @ 108kgs UnEq | Get an apprentiship with a big company and get them to pay you through college and uni, loads of people at my place have done that and have got up the ladder quicker than those of us who joined after doing uni (becomming skint as f**k - largely down to 5 years of drinkng!). Just my 2p but that's what I'll be forcing - sorry advising my kids to do!

My opinions have run their course Member 694, 3112 posts | just_t said:It's laughable when people say uni is useless. It obviously isn't. Useless people are useless regardless of education. If you apply yourself and are disciplined it's fantastic and not only for the qualification. I commuted to uni bit still had an ace time i say its useless because probably 75% of course places are filled by people who basically just dont know what else to do. Of all the people on my course I would hire probably 3 of them out of 50 plus.

'Looks like Ben Affleck according to Pagan' Member 876, 2506 posts SQ 220, BP 140, DL 260620.0 kgs @ 110kgs UnEq | If you're academic, go on and do a-levels, if you do well at them, go to uni. Doesnt really matter what degree you do - a 2.1 in anything puts you in a better position job-wise than someone without (employers see it as evidence that you can stick at things, work on your own etc, plus a degree opens you up to graduate schemes) If you're not academic; construction - stay away from wet trades - hard work and getting designed out on a lot of new projects. As others have suggested go for spark or plumber. LOTS of people go for these tho so helps if you know someone who can get you in. The local Connexions (if they are still going) wont be a great help. Military - I had one cousin join the navy - got trained as a fireman and left as soon as he could to do that. Another cousin joined the army as an officer(after getting his degree) and has had a pretty cushy life since!

My recommended route would be A-Levels then good uni. The choice of eventual university will probably be more important than the course (top unis don't tend to offer many or any of the courses viewed negatively by potential employers).

Member 424, 532 posts SQ 190, BP 145, DL 220555.0 kgs @ 103kgs UnEq | Consider the future.... No one ever seems to give young people a real understanding of "WAGES" vs "COST OF LIVING"...... If only someone had explained it to me.... Example..... If you go for a profession that will pay you £50, 000 a year by the time you are forty. then that sounds great. However, if you live in the south of England and want a family, an average house will cost around £300,000 now, probaly more like £500,000 by then, but lets stick with £300k. You will need a mortgage, which means that, over 25 years you will pay back about double the price of the house (maybe more, maybe less depends on the type of mortgage available at that time). Its common for a mortgage on a £300k house to cost about £1500 per month. Now, your wages are partly tax free, partly lower rate tax, then the rest at 40%. So you take home about £36k after tax and NI for the sake of argument. thats cool - £3000 a month. minus the £1500 mortgage. =£1500 a month then, car(s) £100-200 a month, tax, repayments (if new), mechanics (if not new), insurance etc. Rates, bills, electric, gas, home repairs, £300 at least (mine is a lot more) So we are down to £1000 in your pocket for the month. What about food "strongman" - £150 for you and the missus, £200 if you have kids at least. thats a week. Thats 800-1000 a month... But what about buying stuff for the house, sofas, tv, decorating, gardening, lawnmower, hoover, washing machine, dishwasher etc. Then what about holidays? Pub? Kids swimming lessons, rugby, school uniform.... My very longwinded way of saying that £50k a year by the time you are 40 sounds like great wages. But against the (rising) cost of living it is s**t. Think about the lifestyle you want, the things that are important to you and then what sort of work will allow you to have this. Like Wayne Cowdrey has explained above, I chose a different path, rich in reward, but poor on pounds sterling. I am happy, but we struggle. We work hard and sacrifice a lot of time (and I miss a lot of stuff with my kids as a result which is heartbreaking). But, we are very happy!! I still wonder though, if I knew at your age, what I know now, would I have gone into IT, or investment banking for a few years then followed a vocation once my mortgage was paid!!! Good luck mate - Strongman will keep you human and sane in whatever you do!!

Buy two houses, rent one, live in one and rent the rooms out. then after a year or two, buy another one and another one etc. f**king hell - its like the south "pre-boom"!!! If I could understand the language I would move there and live as a king!
