I'm certainly gonna ride the wave as long and hard as I can. Of course I'll be backing off next week, the better to ride the weeks after Happy.

There's a real mood of optimism in the Sugden at the moment (except Adam, but he's always miserable Wink). We've all been broken or absent, and we're all mending.

Wednesday 7/2

Squat Goblet 30x5, barbell 60x5, 90x5, 115x5x5. Again every set easier than the last. There's a LOT more here.

DB press 22.5x8, 40x1.

Up easy, then suddenly the weights went light, the world darkened, and it came down VERY fast. Maybe leave these a while, then.

Narrow pulldowns 70x8 to warm up for

Partial chins 3x5. All past parallel again, I think.

Feeling better, so time to try again:

DB press 40x4,5.

Narrow seated rows 119x10x2 PB. This is the stack.

15 sets of talking about guitars with Adam, stretching. Well pleased.

Don't take too long off of them Rickster. One bad set doesnt make a disaster!

Nice squatting.

That'll teach me to not type a reply before actually reading the whole post!

Friday 9/2

Jackson week four.

Deadlifts 60x8, 100x3, 140x1, 170x1x5.

Rack pulls 100x2, 140x2, 180x2, 210x2 PB.

These felt heavy in my hands, but then I've never had this weight in my hands before.

Narrow-grip pulldowns 70x8.

Partial chins 3x5. Less good than last time, I think.

Narrow-grip pulldowns 112x8x2 PB.

Stretching and off. Another pretty good session Happy.

Opinions needed.

I've been trying to decide what to do next week. Normally I do four weeks and then a deload week, but that doesn't mesh well with a nine-week deadlift programme; so I'm thinking I might carry the deadlifts through until peaking on the last week of the next four, and then have a really thorough deload the week after. So, for next week, a sort of five-day deload, then back to work:

Sunday: Bench up to 110x3 then 90x10 or so (my usual deload work).

Wednesday: Squat either up to say 100x5x3, or maybe just work up to a single around 140-150 (since I've been doing fairly light volume work, "deload" with a heavy single). Opinions?

Friday: week five of Jackson deadlifts (inc platforms), but no other work.

Latwork only light and only Wednesday. I've made great lat strength (and I think size) gains working 3x/week, but I'm starting to feel the fatigue now.

Does this make sense?

is your body telling you to deload or do you want to do it just out of the habit?

You are on the roll with your 5x5xsquats, and the deads look great too. Bench is almost back to normal. It would be a shame to lose the momentum for no reason.

But if your body is telling you to deload that is a different story.

I think both what you've written and what Joni has said make sense. I wouldnt deload at all on the deadlifts or platforms, so you've got that covered, and dropping all assistance after that is fine, hell I often had to do it because I was toast by then.

With the squats, you're not training them especially heavy, but using the volume to build the strength, so IMO you want a break from the volume. If it were me id go 100x3, 120x2, 140x1.

For bench, id work upto around 115kg x 1, then do 3x3 with 100kg, working on speed and call it done. I wouldnt bother with the 90kg x 10.

Lat work, I think you're better off taking Sunday and Wednesday off of them then coming back to them on Friday, although that means that you're doing them after deads and platforms, so maybe do some on Sunday and then none until the following Sunday. If you're going to give them some rest, make it a few consecutive days of rest imo, they're an assistance exercise and as such you're giving the muscle a rest rather than worrying about your CNS.

Hope that all makes sense...

That makes complete sense, Olly, and is what I'll do.

Joni - I was starting to feel toasty this week. My week fours tend to feel like an achievement to get to the end, I'm really ready for the change at the end of it!

I really don't want to get back to where I last year before I started doing the deloads, where I got unplanned deloads by just being unable to train fairly regularly and had a resting heartrate of 92! So I think the deload stays for the moment.

Thanks boys.

Sunday 11/2

First of two days of change up, back off and recover.

Bench 20x8, 60x5, 80x3, 100x1, 110x1, 115x1, 100x3x3 (all paused).

Working on setup, form, pause and explosiveness here, with three-second pauses. Added comedy value: new people starting across the gym to help the fat guy with pinned under the big bar, whereupon it goes back up to lockout fast Happy.

I feel like I could pause these forever, and all the positives were *quick*. I still struggle, like traditionally joni has, to get the first negative down fast - and after that they're fine. Needs work.

I actually think I figured some stuff out here about foot position and wrist position - the latter might explain why my bench dropped as soon as I stopped using gloves! Hope so.

Incline DB Press 40x5x2.

Piss, piss easy.

And that's that. Stretch, chat with Ant, home.

Last deload workout. We've been doing light volume, so Coach Jackson tells me to do a 140 single.

Wednesday 14/2

Squat Goblet 30x5, barbell 60x5, 80x5, 100x2, 120x2, 140x1x2.

It was too easy not to do another one. By far the easiest, deepest, most upright 300lb squats I've ever done.

Stretching, chatting, home. Nice.
