Out of interest there was more than one inch dumbell,
Which one do they base modern strongman inch dumbells on ?
In 1956 the heavier one was measured (then owned by the reg park barbell company
)at the annual aberdeen sports revue.
it was weight 172 pounds oveall length20 inches diameter of each spere 8and a half inches circumference of handle 7 and three quater inches (which would make diameter2.47 inches.length of handle between speres 4 iinches.
In 1957 at the MR universe comp the 153 pound chalenge dumbell no 2 was lifted knee high by john Gallagher oo scotland and jacobus jacobs of south Africa.
John also lifted the 172 bell to almost knee hight at the aberdeen event.as did another lifter called douglass cameroon.it was lifted chest high by henry gray also.there was also the earlier scarborough dumbell.
Indeed when edward Aston failed to lift the chalenge dumbell he shouted at Inch which dumbellis it mr inch number one number two or number three.
My understanding is that the length of the handle between the speres is what made it impossible for some strongmen to lift it,like Arthur Saxon who failed to manage it who would have had a stronger grip than inch (Arthurs hands were 4 and 3 quater inchs in width.
Inchs reply to Aston was its the one i am lifting tonight.
Anyway which one is the modern inch dumbells based on.
