Monday 27th December, start 14:30

A gentle thaw has started, the car thermometer is reading plus figures, and the gym thermometer is +3. It's still cold though. Not many of us, me and Joe, Glynn and Turner and Handsome Fred and that's your lot.

Squat, leotard, shoes with elevated heel, naked knees, all kilos

20 x 10 all paused
20 x 10 all paused
20 x 10 all paused
60 x 5 all paused
60 x 5 all paused
60 x 5 all paused
wraps on from here, no pauses now
120 x 5
150 x 5
180 x 5
200 x 5
180 x 5

Elevated heels, hands in a touch and feet in slightly, all nice and smooth and compact and best of all deep, Joe watched a few from the side and announced that there would be no trouble with any of them. So that's good. The legs ache a touch but only in the parts that the new position affects, the rest of the leg is fine, so that will be fine in time, just have to ramp it up slowly. One odd thing was that as I wrapped my knees and I lifted the last wrap to slide the end under it was hard on the thumbs, it's never easy but the thumbs usually take it in their stride, toninght they did not, they complained, they completed their task but they weren't happy about it. Tomorrow, or probably the day after I shall go in seach of a cobbler and I shall be most suprised if I don't find one. I have pea and ham soup for tea, then emmerdale and double corrers. Is that living or what ?

Wednesday, 29th December, start 16:00

A relatively late start as I need assistance tonight and Joe and Rick are training fourish so fourish is the time to be there. Jeff and Aaron and Handsome Fred were also present which is never a bad thing.

Bench, raw, all kilos

20 x 20
20 x 20
20 x 20
70 x 5
70 x 5
70 x 5
100 x 3
110 x 3
120 x 2
130 x 1

shirt on courtesy of Joe the Terrible, it was hard work too.

I still can't get my second hand onto the bar, it has to be put there by somone helpful, all of these were to blocks of varying thicknesses, the figure after the weight is the approximate thickness, the trick is to get something that is just thick enough to touch, some were successful, some were not, the one's that were not, were all close, nothing more than the thickness of a cigarette away. And all paused.

150 x 3 (3.5)
170 x 3 (3)
180 x 2 (2.5)
190 x F (2)
200 x 1 (2)
210 x 1 (1.5)
190 x 1 (2)

The 190 fail was a rum do, as I lowered the bar all was well untill almost at the chest when the shirt just slid up my chest and belly. I felt it go and could do nothing, it caused the bar top slip forward and rest on my gut, which wasn't at all unpleasant, the spotters were in like Flynn and had it off me in the blink of an eye. The basic problem is that I am having to handle weights that are heavier than I am comfortable with. Soultion - get used to them and become comfortable with them, only then can they be handled in the manner which is required. This is a hell of a shirt.

Popped off to the White Bear with the good Doctor for some nosebag and a chat and then being Wednesday I went to the home of the tubular bandage where girl number two was ready and waiting. She complained that I was awol last week and that I had some making up to do. I locked her in the room with GoatBoy for the full hour. When they emerged I asked "did he?" she replied "he did" GoatBoy has yet to speak but the big daft grin on his big fat face speaks volumes. He will be back next week to let the new year in

You never mention showering and brushing your teeth / soaking your dentures after you've trained, eaten your meat and potato pie and drunk your diet Coke before you head off to the home of the orthopedic stocking, or whatever you call it. Do you bother freshening up to any great extent at all, or do just keep a pack of baby wipes and some chewing gum in the car? Just curious.

Friday, 31 December, or new Year's eve as some call it, start 14:30

"before you start" says Alan " lets just try something" We put a bench in the power rack and set the pins to hole 12, this is the length of my hand from lockout, the idea is to lock it out from the pins.

Pin 12 lockouts, all kilos and raw

70 x 5
115 x 5
160 x 5
180 x 5

Now we drop the pins to hole 10, another hands length lower roughly, I am assisted to handoff position by two helpful fellows and from there I lock it out and then await a start command and then lower it to the pins

Pin 10 lowers, all kilos, still raw

90 x 3
130 x 3
160 x 3
180 x 3

Full bench, still raw, still kilos

140 x 1, lovely lower, could have been snappier

Deadlift, raw, all kilos

60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
140 x 5
180 x 3
220 x 3
230 x 3
230 x 3
230 x 3

onto blocks now, just below the knees

230 x 3
230 x 3
230 x 3
230 x 3

The lowers were harder than one would imagine and by the time 180 came around they were just a shade too heavy as they were dropping the last few inches or so, but it's new and things do improve quite quickly when they're new.

The deadlift bar has been changed. This one feel a little odd in the hands and there was some slipping and sliding in the hands, especially on the later sets off blocks, I tried using a strap on the right (over) hand but it heep pinching a bit of flesh about half way between the index finger and the thumb which was not fun and I don't believe it's happened before. DrRick leant me one of his murderer's gloves to ease it, which it did to a degree. Then the left (under) hand started slipping, which prompted cries of "girl" and "pussy" so I finished up doing double overhand, with straps and wearing one orange, murderer's glove. This caused some small laughter and calls of "Michael Jackson"

Sloped off around four, dropped Alan at home then off to Tesco for a bit of shopping, after this I will shower, have some nosebag and fall asleep in front of the TV

There are limits to the amount of detail I am prepared to divulge. The place in question has a shower and I use that before and after, that is all.

Odd that my journal should make you think of oral hygiene. But I welcome all questions. My teeth are not removeable for the record.

Happy new year to you Colonel and to all my readers, may we all sail in calmer waters and with the wind at our backs next year.

A bit cold and creaky today, off the White bear afterwards for some nosebag and a chat, then off to r kids for some more nosebag and another chat. Can't beat food that someone else has cooked. Young Aaron graced us with his presence today. I wonder how long he will keep that up. I blame public transport

Monday, 3rd January, start 14:30

Just a few dedicated lifters today, still cold.

Squat, raw, all kilos, heels still elevated

60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
100 x 5
140 x 5
wraps on and belt on
190 x 5
205 x 5
220 x 3
200 x 5

The local cobblers has shut down so I will have to venture further afield on Saturday, there are a couple in Bolton I'm told, we had a bit of a suprise tonight, as one squats, one exerts considerable downward pressure with the feet, the trouble with the block under the heel ploy is that the toes and the heels are on a solid foundation the centre of the foot is not, this caused discomfort in the quads at weights over 205 and caused some instability. Altogether quite unpleasant, I didn't push it and dropped the weight. This should cease to be an issue once I get the shoes actually done.

We adjourned to the White Bear only to discover that they were not serving food, so we legged it to the Waggon which has recently changed hands, Burger and chips with a side order of garlic bread and a diet coke and it was delicious. Especially the burger. I don't know if it was a big kahuna burger but it sure was a tasty burger. I suspect it is bye bye White Bear and hello Waggon. The waitress was along way from being ugly too, which is never a bad thing
