Rick said:Since my car's got a turbo the torque curve is flatter than you'd think for a high specific output engine, though it's obviously a lot faster up the rev range. The difference from half throttle to full is fairly pronounced.

I do track my mpg, largely because if it suddenly starts to alter for no apparent reason it could be an early warning of engine problems. However, it does tell me that the difference on similar journeys from driving deliberately slowly to driving however the hell I want is less than 10%; for under £3 a week I'll have fun, thanks.

This is the opposite of what I find with turbo's!

My torque peaks at 303 lb/ft at 5k rpm, and is DISMAL below 3k rpm. at 2k rpm (this is sensible rpm right?) torque is around 140 lb/ft...

The most legendary decision I ever made was perhaps choosing it over an Imprezza or Evo! What turbo fun do you partake in mate?

Thinking of treating myself to an Evo 8 MR 340 next year in Gunmetal Grey.
£1200 will get it to 400bhp/ 400lb torque and a huge smile on your face.Grin

The standard roadster has a pretty flat torque curve from about 2.5 to 5 or so. Feels torquier with the map I have on it, but I don't have figures for that. (Mind you mine's making less at peak than yours is at "dismal" Happy.)

I'd imagine 400 lb would see you quite a bit over 400bhp in an evo. They need to be revved pretty hard do they not? 300lb at 5k gets me 330bhp at 6.5k, I can imagine an evo peaking a bit higher up the revs than that especially once you start messing around with it.

What car is it Rick? How many psi is it running at? This usually tells pretty much the whole story, if it's a low pressure turbo it'll be a lot less laggy than mine most likely.

Dismal meant only in terms of how laggy it is Rick! It's still plenty enough to get around town with, which is why I don't care about the lag. If I'm driving it properly the lag doesn't matter, and if I'm not, off boost is perfectly fine for getting about with.

GT4 ringlands are unfortunately a problem for a lot of GT4 owners. I'd bet large sums of money that's what problem he had. Options are go forged, stick a new short block assembly from Toyota on it every time it happens or settle for 300bhp and be done with it. I went for a new engine as I've known many forged rebuilds fail before 10k, they burn a lot of oil, it's my daily driver and ultimately are more expensive than replacing the short block when needed.

Mine's also boosting to 20psi, as it happens (when called upon to do so) - but it's obviously a much smaller turbo, so while there's a little lag from off boost to on it's really not a major issue.

Car on the last run out on its winter wheels, last week:

I've been running a Toyota Prius courtesy car whilst mines in the bodyshop(someone hit the back of me). According to the trip computer it's done 42mpg which has been mostly mixed urban driving, as much as I wanted to hate it I've quite enjoyed it for the general day to day running about and have got quite used to not having to change gear too. The transition between being on the electric motor and the regular engine is imperceptible.
