Saturday Bench

The plan today was to work up to a single with 125 and then sets of 3 with 115, but on my warm up 115 single, which went up nice and easy, I felt a slight tweak in my right triceps. In days gone by, I would probably have carried on, but the risk of injury was high, given the ice box conditions, so I decided to retire and live to fight another day.

It's been a while. 23rd November, to be precise, since I've had a full workout. Since then, illness, ten days away and another illness on return have kept me away. At one point I thought my lifting days were numbered. But today, I mustered enough whatever to get out in the cold and at least do a strength test to see where I am. The hope was I could still do 100.

Bar for 10 x 3 sets
50 for 8
60 for 6
70 for 5
80 for 4
90 for 3
100 for 2
110 for 1
Finish

To be truthful, there was at least 5 more there, but I didn't want to tweak anything in a dank, cold garage after almost a month off, so left it there, happy that I don't seem to have lost nearly as much strength as I imagined.

I had quite a big operation on 28th December, and developed sepsis the following day. Felt weak and lifeless, harbouring thoughts of never training again at one point, to be honest.

But today I managed to get to my gym again. All I wanted was to bench 100. I think the last time I couldn't bench 100 was around 1986/7.

Bench
Bar for 10 x 3 sets
50 for 6
60 for 5
70 for 4
80 for 3
90 for 2
100 for 1 - just
Finish

The 70 felt so heavy I was getting really worried about the 100. I lost 6 kilos in eight days after the sepsis, my arms look like spaghetti, and it's a wonder I could do the bar so effortlessly. Loading and unloading the 25s was exhausting. But I've taken the first step back.

I'm back, after several health problems, the latest being tweaking my bad shoulder after a fall ten days ago which prevented me starting back last week. Almost too embarrassed to post my numbers, but on the basis that the only way is up, here we go...

Bench
Bar for 10 x 3 sets
40 for 6
50 for 5
60 for 4
70 for 3
80 for 2
90 for 1
80 for 3
80 for 3
70 for 5
70 for 4
60 for 8
60 for 7
Finish

Not only is strength poor, so is strength endurance and general recovery. But you have to start back somewhere.

80 for 2
90 for 1
80 for 3
70 for 5
60 for 8
50 for 10
40 for 15
Bar for 20
Finish

Still weak as a kitten, lot of emphasis on volume to activate the muscles again, long way to go but the journey has started. Grumbling shoulder and freezing garage didn't help, but didn't stop me either.

Back to it again, hopefully on a regular basis.

Bench
Bar for 10 x 3 sets
40 for 6
50 for 5
60 for 4
70 for 3
80 for 2
80 for 2
70 for 4
70 for 4
60 for 6
60 for 6
Finish.

Horribly weak but it's a start.
