It's not circuit training, but that mode of exercise is used a lot. Too much.

Generally most experts believe good training should be structured and progressive. Crossfit as sold by Crossfit Hq deliberately isn't.

There may well be many "Crossfit gyms" with excellent coaches doing structured training, but is this really Crossfit?

A Crossfit gym sounds a great place to base a physio practice!

The whole thing is a wonderful exercise in branding.

It is a combination of various exercises put together - sometimes seemingly in a random sequence, with no sense of structure, in relation to previous workouts - that challenges participants to complete the list of exercises, for that day, as quickly as possible. The workouts are given on the crossfit website as the WOD (workout of the day); so everyone does the same workout that day.

It is responsible for the resurgence in Olympic weightlifting as a form of exercise in gyms.

It also takes itself far too seriously; and believes it's own hype to the nth degree: such as Crossfit HQ stating in Facebook that the USA would have done better at the Olympics, had everyone done Crossfit.

Paradoxically, none of the top crossfitters actually follow the WOD structure. So in order to get really good at Crossfit, one needs to not to Crossfit.

This is very much what I suspected. There are unquestionably some extraordinary athletes in the Crossfit Games, but I doubt they got to those levels following Crossfit Words off the main site. You simply can't reach the standard of the top competitors in technical movements like snatch by reps to max every few weeks.

Isnt this true with most things though?

You probably wont get olympia size and conditioning following a Flex magazine program, you wont hit world championship strength following stronglift programming.

I dont think many crossfit gyms follow HQ programming but can see it working for newbies to give a flavour.

Surely "crossfit" isnt a program in any sense just a choice to train multiple qualities to increase all round fitness.

In regards to the kipping issue - I see this as a skill to enable performance in competition. Bit like a fosbury flop - people wouldn't use the fosbury flop as a training tool to increase jumping power but the skill nredsto be trained for the competitive performance

suppose it's good for increasing popularity of PL, esp for women who would have traditionally not touched a free weight for fear of 'looking like arnie' within weeks of training.

cross *training* was all bum bags, spandex and bottle of vittel.
cross *fit* is tight 80's shorts, hipster tatts and looking 'hawww.t' on instagram while doing battle ropes. big difference!

Lol pretty much yeah. Just think a lot pf people get butt hurt over the fact someone has managed to create millions off decent branding. Only thing I will say is the focus on gymnastics and olympic lifting has done both those sports a massive service

So, it seems there are good sides and bad sides.

To me is sounds like they have managed to commercialise a form of exercise by giving it enough individuality that they can legally claim some sort of ownership, and make a lot of money. So crossfire is commodity, but not something you can´t do you yourself if you used your noggin???

It also seems to me that they are introducing olympic lifting to people who otherwise would be doing it. This explains why I keep seeing people doing cleans. I never saw amateurs doing that before in a gym..only people who had been trained properly.

I've done a bit of reading and it seems very geeky. I've seen youtube videos of people cheering each other on as if they were kids at a school sports day. Honestly, all bravado aside, I'd have to tell people to shut up if they started doing that whilst I was lifting. There is a difference of getting egged on whilst doing a PB, and having some lycra clad people shouting 'lets here it for Steve, go Steve! You can do it´whilst I am performing a set of cleans.

I'm pretty sure every one who does crossfire must play Pokemon Go.

Also...I've seen meteoric rise in the occurrence of kettle bells. What is is with all the kettle bells?

This seems to be from crossfit as well. Is this one of the ways they individualise their commodity? Kettle bells have there uses, but essential they are a very old tool that were replaces by dumbbells for a reason.

I saw one crossfit video a man teaching his students how to shoulder press kettle bells. Why they hell are people doing shoulder presses with kettle bells?

There is a predilection for a "bro" mentality - coupled with high-5s all around for merely doing an exercise - that is rather cringe worthy.

Also, many of the top level women have traps like Jim Wendler and voices to match; you're probably more likely to find hot "fitness chicks" at a bodybuilder gym.

Having said that, the "let's do what the computer tells us to do attitude" means that crossfitters often have a wonderfully wide-eyed, open attitude to trying new techniques, exercises and programmes.

People look down on crossfit because it is the new kid on the block. I should imagine it took "bottom of the pile" status from Strongman in the eyes of weightlifters and powerlifters.
