So thirteen it was, felt easier up to nine, then the end was in sight, the thirteenth started well but my hamstings were ablaze by ten, so I stopped and gasped for a few seconds and then did the last three. The time this took however ensured that when the bell rang for the fourteenth, Fat Pete stayed on his stool. Very very tired after this. Puddin' and chips for tea and delicious, it served only to make me more tired. I have had a little doze before doing this tonight, which is unusual. Mytholmroyd tomorrow, there are men from these very boards who will lift things over their heads and then drop them. The least I can do is to go and shout at them, and I always do the least I can do.

Long day yesterday, went over to Mytholmroyd to watch team Sugden, followed Satnav on the way there, I had opted for the M61 M65 route, however, once off the motorway, satnav took me a very strange route, one involving many hills and very narrow and twisty roads. It was indeed the journey from hell. On the way back we simply followed the A646 through Tormorden and although hampered by what we assume was traffic inspired bu the Burnley game was actually a very civilized drive. Far, far better than the nonsense we had on the way there. Whoever programmes these satnav are in dire need of a gentle torturing. There was no need for such a convoluted route on the way there and there was certainly nothing gained by going that way. But that aside, it was a fun day.

Not that I notice. Trouble is that all this is easy when you're young and as you age it all gets harder. My collection of niggles and aches and pains which didn't even exist at one time is growing steadily year by year, so much so that I consider it a real achievement just to keep going. No-one else thinks so, and those who have an inkling don't realize the extent of it. But they will, one day, if they are lucky, they will.

Even now I realize that the previous paragraph is a "grumpy old man" post. How old do you have to be to qualify for that I wonder ?

Maybe I should cheer the f**k up and count my blessings. Yeah. I'll do that.

I for one, and I know many others are greatly impressed by anyone who keeps lifting in masters 2 territory.

Monday, 22nd September, start 17:00

"Woke up this morning feeling fine" the old song goes. Well I didn't, I woke up with an aching neck and a creaky back. Trivial things I am sure, but I could do without it on deadlift day. I am due a light session sooner or later, I was very tempted to make it today, I was also very tempted to make it another day. If I changed my mind once today, I changed it thirty times. Then five o' clock came, and there was nohting to do but to warm up, and when warm, nothing to do but start. So a 250 triple with a heavy dose of play-it-by-ear.

Deadlift, raw, no belt, slippers, me and the bar on the floor.
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
Now we begin
100 x 3
140 x 3
180 x 3
Regular readers with notice that I omitted the 160 set this week, this was deliberate, it's not bad idea if stopping around 220 but when pressing on somewhat, there didn't seem much point.
200 x 3
220 x 3
235 x 3
I am confident it's a goer. I ask Rick, he says so too, and he says it with confidence. I appreciate the confidence in his answer
250 x 3
Probably as good a set as I have ever done. First was the worst but not at all bad, and the next two were bob on. Held it for a while at the top (because I could) and lowered it in the manner of the library. It was not silent, it did "clink" and the librarian would have looked down her nose at me. But I would have not have been "shushed" I am as happy as a pig in s**t about this. I wish I had had it videoed. I enjoyed it immensely, this is the second 250 triple since the British. It was better than the last one by some way.

I am often prey to self doubt and I worry about the straw that breaks the camel's back, but throughout the mind changing of the day, one thing and one thing alone sustained me. One thing stood like a lighthouse of certainty in a sea of doubt, the fact that last Friday week, I tripled 240 and I held it for as long as I liked and I lowered it quietly. You can't do either of those things when you are struggling, and I did both, ergo, I was not struggling, not by a long chalk.

That one fact helped me tonight more than I can say. I know some think it foolish and me a t**t do wasting energy. But confidence matters more that strength ever will. Today I feel vindicated. Today I am happier than I have been in a long time. I didn't bother with a death by deadlift as the above is about five and a half ton in volume, another eight or nine in death by was probably not a good idea,

Handsome Jeff made a point that is worth thinking about. Since death by was started, I have been doing an extra 160 or so reps of deadlifting per week. That can't be doing any harm.

Later tonight I will charge a glass and drink a toast - to library deadlifts - god bless 'em and those who do them.

Thank you for your attention.

I said it at the time and I will say it again, that 250x3 was as nice a set of deadlifts as I think I have ever seen you do. You seemed a lot more comfortable in your starting position and held strong positions throughout, more so than I think I have ever seen you do. Maybe the increased fitness is enabling you to hit (and hold) better positions?
