I'm visiting manchester on Sunday for a night out and I'm wondering if anyone could recommend any decent restaurants in Manchester City centre. Italian or American preferably. Thanks

Unless it is a Rick approved list, i wouldnt trust it

Most of them are excellent, but i recently went to a place called "The Room" and that's always very highly rated on these lists... Well the place was fantastic, the food was nothing special in all honesty

I like Oast House for this reason....

They pour a sauce in the small bowl at the top of the kebab which then runs down the kebab and into the awesome chips! They do chicken, prawn & beef.

That's incredibly kind, and probably quite wrong Happy. I've only been to two of the five you mention, yet...

The OP mentioned two cuisines, so I'll limit myself to those...

Italian: San Carlo has a good atmosphere but the food is average for the price IMO. I'm told San Carlo Cicchetti is excellent; it's on my list to try. I'm not myself hugely interested in Italian (it's a flaw in my character; or maybe I've just never had the really good stuff. People often say Manchester's missing a top-class Italian joint).

American: for burgers and wings, Almost Famous is great. So is Solita, with the benefit of a significantly wider menu. Luck Lust Liquor & Burn is high, possibly even next, on my check-out list and gets good word of mouth.

In those categories, I'd go to Cicchetti and Solita, I think. The hungrier I was the more I'd lean to Solita.

What did you think of Red's Rick?

I quite enjoyed the American type food they offered there

Haven't been. Reviews have been mixed. I'd cheerfully go but it hasn't been a priority (other than this summer I've not eaten much in the city centre in ten years now - needs to change!).

I'd say you've never had the good stuff.

Locanda Locatelli and Theo Randall @ The Intercontinental are easily two of my favourite restaurants, ever. In fact, in terms of proper dining, Theo Randall is the place I've been back to the most, and where I've eaten two of my top 5 dishes of all time (pan fried chicken livers in a puy lentil salad and the Sicilian lemon tart - Jay Raynor's best dessert in London for a few years).

I realise none of this helps for Manchester. Although my friends all say good things for Australasia, and they do a mean Vodka Martini which is never a bad thing.
