So I'm watching Ilin do some nice easy snatches and c&j's and then come the squats.
I know he's a weightlifting god and can do whatever the f**k he wants but I can't say I wasn't surprised at the depth of them. Maybe he's considering competing in the SPF?!

there was a debate on pendlay forum about this. He advocates full squats to anyone who asks about squatting...but as you say, he kind of knows what hes doing. Think hes just working on 'sticking' points? Watch his snatches, he has no problem hitting them positions well lol. I think if i tried to stop half way down, id find it pretty tricky anyway! So maybe hes on to something. Dont think ill be doing it though, i have 1000 other things to improve before my squat sticking point lol

Really?
Unless you know his reasons why question it? Clearly knows what he's doing and clearly knows how to squat properly

I'm absolutely sure he's doing them for a reason, however, I was simply stating I was surprised having watched an awful lots of weightlifting videos over the years and having never seen a weightlifter squat to this depth.

Maybe he thinks he's squatting to depth, and no one else dares question him

He said thats where he likes to squat to, as long as its beloe parallel its fine for anyone, even though some of his arent. He also had quite serious back issues a few years ago and people with his problem dont like going right the way down unless they absolutely have to. Polovnikov is an example of this.

Squat depth means nothing to him. Being able to stand up with a heavy clean or having the legs and hips to fully extend with a max snatch do. It's the purpose of his training to do this as effectively as possible.
Maybe he just wants a lift named after him?

Has anyone ever tried to squat like the way he does? It's f**king hard.
It is weird though but he does such a high volume of the classics I don't think it matters much how he squats. He's had years and years and years of getting hella strong so can't say he's at a disadvantage squatting like this.

He's obviously strong enough to stand up with world record lifts with ease! So don't think he needs to worry about his leg strength.
Maybe he uses it to help him develop his drive in the second pull and jerk.
Maybe he doesn't go as deep because he looses his back position when he goes deep.
Maybe he sees injury risk in squatting deep so saves it for the important lifts.
Maybe he is trolling the weightlifting community.
What ever way you look at it he's doing summt right!

I believe he has said it is because of injury - I think someone posted the link in the thread at Pendlay.
