The video is weird. Something obviously seems to go wrong before the bar started to drop. He starts falling hard at the same time the bar starts to drop. And there seems to be a missing frame, as the video skips a frame or two as the bar passes behind him. You can't even tell if it hits him or not. Other witnesses report the bar did not hit him at all. Sounds like previous injury he wasn't aware of that let go when he was under the bar.

Can severed spinal cords never be fixed?

Never say never, but no, never.

Lots of places are reporting that the bar bounced back at him, but the vids dont seem to support that clearly enough. But what this could mean is that people don't believe that it hit his back on the way down.

From a very basic view i'd be curious as to what injury was already there and the damage caused by him dropping to his ass like did.

Freak accident or not, feel sorry for the guy.

This possibility just freaks me out. 105kg is a f**k load of weight in terms of trauma, but if it didn't even hit him, then it really isn't. Everyone here would bear 100kg of strain through their back any day of the week without a second thought, and then to sever your spinal cord through that? It's scary

Surely to have a severed spinal cord the bar must have fallen straight down on his spine, when he was sat hunched over on the floor?

I would say there are plenty more dangerous sports that either of them. Plenty.

And Traps is right, rugby is definitely one of them.

This video reminds me how dangerous this whole buisness is.

I believe that Crossfit is more dangerous as nubies are often left unsupported in very technical oly lifts where as stronman is genraly done by ex bodybuilders, powerlifters and oly boys.

Crossfit isnt too bad in some ways but there are a few things which are just plain crazy, like atlas stone squats, where you have to shoulder a stone, roll it to the back of your neck and squat. What happens if you fall foward, going to be hard to get out of the way of that stone!
